creative commons / copyright templates

hey David - thanks for the work on the CC-BY-SA template! one thing we might want to do is copy over other templates from Wikipedia so that images and other content can be more easily categorized. I think it's important that we respect copyright as much as possible to avoid problems, and Wikipedia seems to have a bunch of great image copyright templates that cover off pretty much every situation. --Dragfyre 11:00, 31 July 2007 (MDT)

Here's a non-exhaustive list of templates we could use:
  • http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:PD (contains links to several different types of public domain declarations)
  • http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:GFDL (contains links to several different types of GFDL declarations... might be overkill, but at least it would allow us to properly license images found on Wikipedia)
  • http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Non-free_fair_use_in (for non-free fair use images)
  • http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:No_source
  • http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:No_license
  • http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:No_source_no_license
  • http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Don%27t_know
Others, for certain types of images which might be useful:
  • http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:UN_map (for UN maps)
  • http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:PD-USGov-CIA-WF (for CIA Factbook maps)

ParserFunctions

is the ParserFunctions extension installed on this thing? It doesn't look like it.--Dragfyre 13:47, 31 July 2007 (MDT)

Pilgrim House

Pff, that was a mistake, deleting it. Should it have been moved to the talk page? I was confused about that, but that was not why I deleted it, just a mistake. But I added it back, kinda. Gerald 11:05, 7 August 2007 (MDT)

Ok, I understand we don't need our own yet. When we do I will help contribute to it. I suppose POV issues are something that will be decided as more people get involved, they need a consensus decision. I noticed you were traveling, Taiwan sounds fun, I hope it is! Gerald 11:11, 7 August 2007 (MDT)

adminship

Hey, re your comment, I suppose it's up to you - I wouldn't mind. I won't be able to guarantee that I'll be a particularly active admin, but if you want someone to help out a little who knows a bit about the ins and outs of wikis, then sure ;) --Dragfyre 15:17, 4 September 2007 (MDT)

Hello from France

I am the webmaster of frequence19 and I would like open a French section of your encyclopaedia. In 2011 in France we will celebrate the arriving of Abdul baha in Paris. The committee of the organization of this event requested to me for create an bahai encyclopaedia. Thus I come has you for we associate.--Superouioui 04:42, 7 September 2007 (MDT)

Hi Superouioui, its great that you've come here :) I will set up fr.bahaikipedia.org for you immediately. It is exciting because we also just launched the Chinese version zh.bahaikipedia.org :D I will reply here when it is done or you can check yourself also. David 05:25, 7 September 2007 (MDT)

Copyright re: Sacred Writings, works of the Guardian

Goals of the Ten Year Crusade.

We might want to add something about this in the Copyright templates... I found it while browsing bahai-library...

Sacred Writings, the works of the Guardian, materials produced by World Centre Publications, or the Bahá'í International Community may, according to an official statement by the Universal House of Justice, be reproduced electronically with no restrictions.

see http://bahai-library.com/uhj/permission.html --Dragfyre 09:56, 21 September 2007 (MDT)

Hey - I was thinking more along the lines of the included graphic, which I found on bahai-library... the copyright status is as noted in the official statement of the Universal House of Justice. The current copyright status I've indicated for the graphic isn't exactly right, and it would be nice to have a special option for "Works of the Guardian", "Baha'i World Centre/BIC publications", etc. I'm mostly concerned with media/images; text is a different matter, and I agree that we should probably go easy on storing entire copies of the Writings in wiki format. --Dragfyre 12:04, 21 September 2007 (MDT)

hosting etc.

hmmmm, i suppose - you posted all the hosting-related instructions to the admin boards right? are there likely to be any issues while you're away? oh and I can't guarantee I'll be super responsive, but I'll at least try ;) --Dragfyre 19:14, 28 September 2007 (MDT)

true. would it be ok if the new wikis waited until you came back?--Dragfyre 19:22, 28 September 2007 (MDT)

Hello from Germany

Hello, I have just came across Bahaikipedia and the first thing I would like to do is to express my admiration! Great, I am really very positively impressed! You seem to be the most active author in the English project, correct? Some time ago, we in Germany wanted to start a similar project, but it did not work, for many trivial reasons. There was already some material in German prepared, so my first thought was, why not to try to make a German portal? The other idea which would be near to me, were to open a Russian portal (my mother language). But German first, I will try to draw attention of a few active German Baha'i wikipedians to your site. I am just placing a new language request on the new-language-request site? Where on Earth are you? Mine is a little village in Germany between Frankfurt and Erfurt. You can reach me over <contact AT chimgan.net>

David!

I am happy to be contributing again. I think I will be working mostly technical stuff, bringing articles over from wikipedia, changing things to BPOV, and the like. I am not comfortable writing articles of contributing to them much. I love this project though, and if it can be helpful to someone else like me who found the Faith online, then it is a Godsend.RuhiWarrior19 05:59, 11 October 2007 (MDT)

Also, David, how do I go about using book cover images, are they public domain?RuhiWarrior19 06:42, 11 October 2007 (MDT)

I visited both, and a lot of other websites that individuals run. Bahai.org I just did not find helpful, it gives basic FAQs, and has no references or quotes from the writings. It has some more in-depth information at info.bahai.org, but nothing introductory to spur someone's interest or keep it. Bahai.us has a lot of the good introductory stuff, but no real resources for further investigation. If they combined the two... The Baha'i news sites I did not visit. What worries me however is how many covenant breaker websites there are online, and how they turn up prominently on the search pages and I don't think a seeker would see a difference unless ey know in advance the difference.RuhiWarrior19 13:42, 11 October 2007 (MDT)

Covenant Breaker Sites

Living in Idaho where the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is big, (Mormonism) I see the LDS Faith as latent Troops waiting to enter. They were founded at the same time, their founder was tapping into the atmosphere of the Bab's coming and correctly foresaw many Baha'i events, but they fail to recognize that Christ as returned. Yet if a Mormon tries to research the connections between our Faiths, they get almost exclusively Covenant Breaker sites.

Seeing the popularity of wikipedia, and the many advantages the wiki format has over other formats for researching a religion, I would not be surprised if this site does help counter that problem.RuhiWarrior19 18:50, 11 October 2007 (MDT)

Tahirih BPOV

David, what is the BPOV issue with the article on Qurratu'l-Ayn? The article seems correct in BPOV to me. RuhiWarrior19 19:02, 11 October 2007 (MDT)

Vandalism and Quotes

I apologize for my extreme posting on your discussion page lately. I have an idea for increasing the usefullness of this encyclopedia for further exploration of issues relating to the Baha'i Faith. Some of the articles from the Baha'i Encylcopedia being compiled by the NSA do this, and I was hoping we might make this standard on Bahaikipedia pages. My idea is that a few quotation be included in each article under a section entitled Further Reading, or Quotations from the Baha'i writings. Short qoutations relating to the topic at hand with links in the attribution to where the entire writing is availible online. I have a demonstration of what I mean in my sandbox http://bahaikipedia.org/User:Gerald/sandbox1 RuhiWarrior19 09:29, 13 October 2007 (MDT) David, sorry again. I have been finding random vandalism on a few major pages. The word Baha'i has been messed with and made unreadable, and random words like drumbcol and riccodondrole are being added to the top of pages. The Help page, the Main page, and the About page have been messed with, I have reverted them all, but I think perhaps editing on main pages should be limited to people with accounts, rather than IP addresses? I am not able to do this, so I thought I would bring it up.RuhiWarrior19 09:41, 13 October 2007 (MDT) David, I will take the quotes on as a personal project of mine, great opportunity to help while studying the writings. As for the vandalism, I will try and keep on it anytime I am online as well. (I am somewhat intrigued honestly as to who is doing it, but their IP address changes every time.) Allah'u'abha!RuhiWarrior19 07:44, 14 October 2007 (MDT)

All of the images come from http://bahaullah.org/. The terms of service there are the same as at the media bank,a dn I expect they will be included in the media bank at some point. I maintained original captions, in keeping with the TOS, however I only included them in the actual article not on the Image info pages. http://bahaullah.org is an amazing resource, and an enchanting site. Hey David, well done on the new main page design of the Bahaikipedia as shown in your sandbox7. This will give the Bahaikipedia its own image! :) Allow me to give my humble suggestion:

The bottom part of the page where the column of Navigate Bahaikipedia and Community seem quite empty. If there is no other contents to be added inside, I personally think that it would be nice if the column of Community to be placed at the same row of Navigate Bahaikipedia.

Sorry that I can give only comment but no contributions of the content. All the best!

Thank you :) That's a good suggestion and I'll do that unless I need all the extra space for something. Best, David 08:27, 11 July 2008 (UTC)

The concept of "consultation" on a comparison.

I think we need to dwell more on this. Just a quote from Shoghi Effendi may not be able to give the idea.

However, I would refrain from making a comparison, but I think the spesific word in arabic will be termed as "musyawarah" or "muafakat". We need Baha'is who are fluent in Arabian to verify.

Just to note, alot of Malay (Malaysian Malay) uses contextualized, lifted and borrowed Arabian words. User:Badiboy85

I have just found this site. Great. Needed. David your work is appreciated. I wanted to write the history of the Chatham Islands. Can you start the page please and then contact me to fill in the details for the 12 Baha'i who have visited and lived there from 1969 on wards.

I am currently working on the web and I was called to build some pages for the Terry McAuliffe`s campaign, sorry I didn`t let you know in advance but no worry my account wasn`t hijacked. A question re: my Bahaikipedia page

Hi David,

My name is Randie Gottlieb. I'm a Baha'i in Washington State, and have been active in teaching Baha'i children's classes for many years. I recently added some of my self-published children's class activity books to the Bahaikipedia website, and wonder why you deleted all but the one published by George Ronald. Did I add them incorrectly? Or did someone ask you to remove them? Please advise.

Sincerely, Randie rg@unityworks.net

Hi Randie,
I don't want to discourage you from contributing to Bahaikipedia but the pages were deleted for a few reasons. The primary reason being that the books appear to be self-published. We only list books that can be tied to one of these publishers: Category:Publishers. The second comes from looking at who is contributing the pages to the site and the reason for their contribution. Because you are the creator of the books and the site they link to it appears to be only for self-promotion which we can't allow.
The reason we can't allow self-published material is because we can't know what the content of the books are, and allowing self-published material could lead users to thinking we're recommending what turns out to be bad material. Our 'test' for what qualifies as good material then becomes something published by one of the publishers linked above.
Hope that clears it up.
David 14:56, 26 August 2010 (EDT)

Alla Abha David

I am Kamran, I was trying to edit the page of Dr Peter khan. Wanted to add few information about him. Looks like I messed it up. Can you please fix it, if possible. I am new to this and first time trying to edit something from Bahaikipidia.

Thank you David

Nice job...keep it up buddy :)

No problem. Thanks for your efforts! David 12:55, 3 November 2010 (EDT)

no problem! I didn't know how to delete the page, so I just deleted the content. I try and check recent changes every day, so if you need any help, please let me know! (You usually get to ridiculous stuff before I do anyways). Though, I don't know much about programming and editing and all. Thanks for all your hard work; it's really a great site!

poke

Hi. See you copied just about everything i did in wikipedia.... Working on a side project now over here. Smkolins 15:30, 7 January 2012 (UTC)

You've done really very amazing work on Wikipedia for the Baha'i articles. I hope you are okay that I've mirrored them here.
Alas my only plaint is that more are not there to be mirrored. So many countries remain not done... Smkolins 20:56, 8 January 2012 (UTC)
You can add any templates or make any changes here that you like. Thanks for getting in touch. David 17:34, 7 January 2012 (UTC)
No idea how to do it. Did you see the project in my sandbox? - [1] Smkolins 20:56, 8 January 2012 (UTC)
I did, if you use templates on Wikipedia that we don't have here just let me know which ones they are and I'll copy them over. For exampel when you first moved it [2] there was that "Template:Bibleverse". Let me know if you'd like to use that. I'd just create the page "Template:Whatever" with the content from the same page on Wikipedia. Or, we can create new templates if you can think of a set of data that you'd like to represent identically everywhere you use it. David 21:02, 8 January 2012 (UTC)
I kind of thought about those templates but they linked internally in wikipedia to the Bible - not sure that would be here? Maybe if the template could link to ... bahairesearch.com? Or maybe Bahaitext? That way it might work to link Baha'i refs too. Right now I'm manually linking to articles. Smkolins 03:39, 9 January 2012 (UTC)

country articles (another thread)

Hi, what is the view on importing this? [3] and the main-article linking done from there.... - course then there's the work of writing more such articles in wikipedia itself... 2010 data is beginning to show up in ARDA too.

And then there is [4] (though it is incomplete, there is work progressing on telling the story of early members per tribe.)

Smkolins 03:57, 9 January 2012 (UTC)

I'm happy to have those articles imported. I'm going to try and get back to working on doing that soon. We do have Bahá'í Faith and Native Americans. David 04:04, 9 January 2012 (UTC)
Another heavily updated page and one to keep an eye on - [5] Smkolins 02:34, 16 January 2012 (UTC)

New a new member sends greetings

Hello David,

My name is Candace Hill and I am on Staff at the Wilmette Institute. I am a sometime editor over at Wikipedia, and I have joined today so that I can edit the page here for the Wilmette Institute. I made a bio page for myself, which notes that I am also the author of a book about the Baha'i Temple. I'm happy to also put up a page for the book, if you give me permission to do so.

You should talk/tweet a bit more about the availability of your wikimedia. I've used photos for courses at the Wilmette Institute as our goal is to make them more visually interesting. I will probably upload some of the archival photos I have as a result of my research for the Baha'i Temple book. Look for a Horace Holley to bless your publishing effort.

Candace Hill--I'm nonpartisan 16:32, 17 January 2012 (UTC)

Hi Candace, please feel free to add any pages that relate to the Faith including books. Just so you know regarding pictures. We have a "common" image repository located at bahaimedia.org. Any image uploaded there can be referenced from Bahaikipedia or any sister project (bahaitext, or any other language of bahaikipedia like the French or Portuguese versions). If you want to give any other projects the ability to use those images too please upload them there. If an image is uploaded on Bahaimedia it doesn't need to be uploaded here too. Thanks for the message & welcome :) David (talk) 23:38, 24 February 2014 (UTC)

Site organization

Hi David,

Just wanted your thoughts on whether to harmonize our top-level browsing or category pages across sites. I haven't taken a close look recently at your sites' categorization schemes (and I know I ought to change Bahai9 to have more category pages in the Category: namespace instead of the main namespace), but I think the site's use of the following main categories can be very helpful for finding information one might not find by searching by subject alone:

  1. By subject (Material, Human (Arts, Sciences), Spiritual, categorizations of 'Abdu'l-Baha in SAQ Chapter 3)
  2. By protagonist (specific individuals, information about types of individuals, races, countries, community, institutions, etc.)
  3. By Writings/type of material (e.g., information on or about the specific Writings of the Faith, though potentially organized by author, rank of importance, alphabetically, etc.)
  4. By Time-sequence-priority (e.g., history, calendar, types of things Baha'is are expected or encouraged to do every day, week, etc., prioritizing activities like the core activities, etc.)

What do you think? I might glean some insights to add back to my site in reviewing your categories as well. And pending the "federated wiki" software idea, we could manually add links to the same category page at the other sites.

Brettz9 (talk) 21:50, 12 September 2015 (UTC)

If we did that, how do we display that correlated information to the user?
Whatever way you think--we could do so as we have already done, e.g., at the bottom of the Star of the West pages... Brettz9 (talk) 19:54, 13 September 2015 (UTC)
As an aside, I feel like categories as Mediawiki implements them are really only useful for maintenance. Since they're at the very bottom of the page they're unlikely to be discovered if people don't know to look down there, (a blog or e-commerse site usually has them just below the page title) and the information presented on a category page once you get there can be somewhat confusing. That's unfortunately I think one of the big problems with bahai.media, the whole site is nothing but categories and navigating them I think is a real hassle for most.
As far as being unlikely to be discovered, you can of course link directly to the categories pages from other pages, as you have done, e.g., on the Main page leading to Category:Teachings or what not. I find the categories quite useful, as a kind of breadcrumbs, though I admit them being at the top of the page might be more discoverable. I like how the category pages allow automatic alphabetical sorting, but I also agree that it can be more intuitive--and sometimes more useful than alphabetical listing--to have your own "category" pages which are not in the category namespace and allow for free-form editing. Maybe the "ideal" solution would be if the software allowed you to embed alphabetical category listings, so you could control where, whether, and how you displayed them. Maybe you should put that link on the to-do page?

Site licensing

I'm wondering if you'd like to take a look at http://bahai9.com/wiki/Main_Page#Legal_Information and adopt something similar. It would require the consent of other contributors, and maybe it wouldn't work if you are borrowing a lot from Wikipedia (unless you applied it for the content which was not from Wikipedia). I think it may be more forward-looking to ensure you can put the content under different license terms if that becomes favorable. For example, if the institutions wanted to publish some of the material, they might not want to add attribution information (since they don't want to focus on individuals); under the current license, you couldn't let them do so unless you and all other authors of the page(s) in question gave permission. I think it could avoid future troubles by ensuring present-day authors give that right today. And doing so does not revoke any rights for people to utilize the current Creative Commons license terms if they wish (so people don't need to fear that giving you powers to re-license under other license terms would take away their rights to continue utilizing/modifying/redistributing the content up to that date under the terms they were aware of). Brettz9 (talk) 21:50, 12 September 2015 (UTC)

I'm not sure I see what the difference is between our licensing terms? We are both on a Creative Commons license. There were some incorrect references to the old license however in MediaWiki:Edittools which I've removed now. David (talk) 09:22, 13 September 2015 (UTC)
The difference is that although I am also currently releasing under Creative Commons, I am asking for the full copyright to whatever contributions are made to the site. That means I can license under other terms as well (though that does not allow me to revoke the Creative Commons terms to date). In your case, users are only permitting you to use their content under that Creative Commons license, so if you wanted to also release the contents later under say the GNU FDL or whatever--or if you wanted to switch the whole site contents later to say a more permissive license which did not require attribution--you could not do so with the material contributed by others unless you found all of the authors later and obtained their permission. Of course, even if you did change to the way I am doing it, you couldn't use content with its own preexisting license, e.g., from Wikipedia, and change the terms to be under your own copyright or some other open source license, unless you were the only one who contributed to that page's contents. So, if you ever were to change away from Creative Commons and/or try to dual-license or multi-license under other licenses, you could not do so for those pages where you used content under Creative Commons unless the terms were compatible with CC. Some licenses, like the MIT license, are very generous, and can work with almost any other license--they pretty much just state that people can't sue the contributors, but they otherwise allow you to use and modify the content under whatever new terms you wish to add, so, for example, you could use MIT license content to become part of a Creative Commons document (but not vice versa) Brettz9 (talk) 17:28, 13 September 2015 (UTC)
IC, personally I don't see a reason we couldn't follow wikipedia's example should a change be necessary. David (talk) 22:13, 13 September 2015 (UTC)
The difference there was that they actually worked with the people responsible for the license to change its terms. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNU_Free_Documentation_License#Compatibility_with_Creative_Commons_licensing_terms . (I don't fully understand how they could have even done that (I guess because there must be a clause allowing automatic compatibility of the GNU FDL with future versions and then the new version of the FDL grandfathered compatibility), but regardless, that does not seem like an option available to us.) Brettz9 (talk) 23:55, 13 September 2015 (UTC)
Also, I think it's stronger to operate from the position of community-generated decisions as opposed to operator-decided decisions (ie, benevolent dictator). Part of the reason is because my long term vision for the site is for it to eventually be taken over and run by someone else in the future. Hopefully an institution but if not, another competent individual. Either way, I don't want to give them the power or president to making unilateral decisions for everyone else as I think that would be the quickest way to destroy the only advantage this site has going for it compared to others, the potential for a community. And hopefully in the future, more of a community will exist, which would make unilateral decisions even more dangerous. Whoever takes over in the future needs to be aware that this is a community effort. People who maintain the project are not the ones who should be deciding its direction or future (unless they are contributors themselves). David (talk) 22:13, 13 September 2015 (UTC)
While I generally agree with the idea you express here, the problem is that although you may have the choice to add more restrictive terms, you will not have the choice to become more permissive (nor to become more restrictive if it is incompatible with the current license). Since gaining copyright does not permit you to revoke permissions on the content to date, the only "abuse" you could do with those privileges is to say publish your own (e.g., modified) version of Bahaikipedia which was closed source and for profit (and that might not even be a bad thing if say you handed it over to the institutions and they wanted to do such a thing--but they would not have that choice under your current terms). I think it is more likely that, if anything, the community might end up wanting to loosen the terms (e.g., avoid the need for attribution). Again, you wouldn't have that ability under the present terms. If you really wanted to reassure your users, you could perhaps pledge yourself not to change the terms unless there was a community vote, etc., but I think that only ties your hands (e.g., if the institutions wanted to adopt and change it). date of death

it appears that the date of death for MUNA MAHMUDNIZHAD is June 16 http://bahai-library.com/uhj_messages_1963-86_full&chapter=6 (see p. 581 in link) The following text was written by the Universal House of Justice: " HANGED 16 JUNE MISS MUNA MAHMUDNIZHAD, 18 YEARS OLD, DAUGHTER OF YADU'LLAH,"

The formatting was confusing, so I have fixed it here: http://bahai.works/MUHJ63-86/364/Execution_by_Hanging_of_Ten_Bah%C3%A1%E2%80%99%C3%AD_Women_in_Shiraz
Though the wording is very confusing by saying the 10 women were hanged 18 June, but gives various earlier dates for their hanging or execution immediately after.David (talk) 14:30, 13 March 2016 (PDT)
Nevermind, the various dates other than June 18th refer to the hanging or execution of the people directly referred to preceding that date. David (talk) 14:59, 13 March 2016 (PDT)

Date of death of Mona Mahmudnizhad

Perhaps if you are so inclined, you may wish to gain specific clarification from the Baha'i World Center for actual date of death and a confirmation request of the UHJ statement in regards to the publication: http://bahai-library.com/uhj_messages_1963-86_full&chapter=6 (see p. 581 in link) The following text was written by the Universal House of Justice: " HANGED 16 JUNE MISS MUNA MAHMUDNIZHAD, 18 YEARS OLD, DAUGHTER OF YADU'LLAH,"

Please follow the link I provided above here again. You will see two mistakes in your understanding of the quoted sentence. The first is that the 16 June date refers to Muna, when that information belongs in the preceding sentence, in full it is "MRS. ṬÁHIRIH SÍYÁVUSHÍ, 32 YEARS OLD, WIFE OF JAMSHÍD, HANGED 16 JUNE". Secondly, 16 June is the date of execution of Jamshid, not Mrs. Tahirih Siyavushi. So when viewing the full sentence: "MISS MUNÁ MAḤMÚDNIZHÁD, 18 YEARS OLD, DAUGHTER OF YADU’LLÁH, EXECUTED 12 MARCH", the March 12 date is not Muna's execution but Yadu'llah's. This can be further confirmed by looking at MUHJ #355 "Execution of Two Baha'is in Shiraz" which cites Yadu'llah's execution as being 12 March. David (talk) 15:57, 13 March 2016 (PDT)

Date of death of Mona Mahmudnizhad

David...ok I see where the June 18th date is used in the major heading of the 10 women including Mona. Thank you for your insights.

Request

Creation of Page for (1) Shahrbanu (wife of Hussain Ibn Ali) and (2) Shahar Yar, her brother or cousin is requested. Thanks

I do not have time to create the page myself. Also, I'm not sure it falls within the scope of the project right now. David (talk) 14:41, 4 July 2016 (PDT)
