Thank you very much for reverting the edits this afternoon :) David 15:47, 28 September 2009 (UTC)

My pleasure, however small the effort. As 'Abdu'l-Baha said, "Help along one another's projects and plans." (Consultation, no. 19)--pretty suitable for wikis, eh? Best wishes, Brettz9 17:40, 28 September 2009 (UTC)

Abbreviations[edit]

Thank you for that list, I hadn't seen it before, and it helps a lot! Also, I made the changes that you suggested in regards to who has to enter captcha, thank you for that too. David 12:36, 7 November 2009 (UTC)

Cool, glad it helped (though I see I'm still being asked for a captcha (when there are links in the page)--not sure how easy that is to change)... Anyhow, you're really doing a superb job here--becoming a really cool resource... I've got to find some time to work more on http://bahai9.com -- trying to add Lights of Guidance (have it now in wikiable form)... Anyhow, best wishes... Brettz9 12:47, 7 November 2009 (UTC)
Ok, the captcha should be fixed again. I've set it so autoconfirmed (account for x number of days plus x number of edits) can bypass normal captchas, your account should meet the criteria, hopefully it's fixed now. Btw, perhaps I can save you a bit of time with Lights of Guidance: https://bahai.works/Lights_of_Guidance though I'm not sure exactly what you're looking for :) David 18:14, 7 November 2009 (UTC)
I'm still getting asked for the captcha on this page with links. As far as Lights, that looks very cool that you have Lights of Guidance online there... My version just goes a little further as far as the body of the text by making wiki links for "On behalf of the Universal House of Justice", etc. in the quote citation, as well as making a citation and link for each quote to our static copy of Lights of Guidance at http://bahai-library.com . But my intention is to integrate the quotations within the main body of our site pages--in many cases expanding pages to reflect those covered in Lights, but also moving quotations around into further or different subcategories where I think we can improve on the categorization of the original. --Brettz9 03:07, 8 November 2009 (UTC)
Do you mind trying again? David 11:12, 8 November 2009 (UTC)
Test...Successful :) Brettz9 13:33, 8 November 2009 (UTC)

Lights of Guidance[edit]

I've begun to do a little linking too [1], but nothing it seems like what you are talking about. I'd be interested to see any examples of what you have in mind, is anything live on bahai-library yet? David 14:31, 8 November 2009 (UTC)

See for example [2]. Two of the links in the citatiion lead to internal wiki pages (in this case to wiki pages about Lights of Guidance and about letters written on behalf of the Universal House of Justice), while another link leads back to our static copy of Lights of Guidance at http://bahai-library.com
I've made interwiki links for all of the English-translated Writings as well as some other important works (in this case you can see in the wiki source that I used "log" for Lights of Guidance in this page)--see http://bahai9.com/wiki/Bahai9:Using_this_Site_%28Technical%29 for the list, using the abbreviations on that page I shared earlier with you to facilitate this ability to give our users the ability to verify sources have been copied correctly by being able to go to an uneditable book copy (at least uneditable to the public)--and having little excuse not to add a citation in the first place, since it is so easy to do.
I think this combines the best of wikis with the best of static copies (even if there is presently no easy and immediate mechanism for people to recommend edits to the static copies as would be nice; I'm not a fan of wikis for this since confirming it has not been tampered with, although unlikely, involves checking the page history, whereas a site using the officially proofread copies would be pretty well immune from that). --Brettz9 23:53, 8 November 2009 (UTC)
Btw, maybe because they are new links (yesterday I just tried submitting a page with the existing links as seemed to maybe trigger the captcha before), but I got asked again for the captcha just now.
Perhaps I've put the no captcha rules in the wrong setting file, but I won't be able to change that until I get home. Oh well, thank you for keeping me informed :)
Sure.
So I'm curious, do you plan on doing this for the whole book, or just portions? Also, do you have all the material already on bahai-library in order to create the links to the static site?
I plan to add the whole book. But rather than trying to get a refined categorization all at once, I'm more copy-and-pasting rather large blocks of quotations into a general page, and then allowing myself (or others if others actually start contributing) to move some of the quotations to subpages, etc., at a later time.
I faced some problems you've mentioned with Bahaiworks. It runs on Mediawiki but I didn't want it to look like a typical wiki. I changed the skin and hid all the editing tools unless a user creates an account. Once they create an account they can make contribtuions and then it's no different then keeping on top of RecentChanges on Bahaikipedia. If it get's too big for one person to manage you can install something called FlaggedRevs [3], basically, no change is made public until reviewed by a person in the "reviewer" group. You can have a handful of people in this group, and then allow the site to grow exponentially.
Hmm. For Writings references, I still like the idea of linking to a no-doubts page since there's much less of a question about edit history. FlaggedRevs sounds good for regular wiki pages, but I'm just not a fan of hosting the Writings themselves in wiki format (outside of compilations like http://bahai9.com which link back to them of course!), except perhaps at a publisher's site who wished to be simplify reporting of errata.
This is really exciting to me since I hope to expand away from English-only sites as soon as people come forward to assist. David 10:51, 9 November 2009 (UTC)
I was meaning to ask about that. Did you find it hard to set up the subdomains? Are those fully independent Mediawiki installations? If I figure that out, I need to find out how to make language links actually lead to the subdomain. It's really a crying shame not to have Persian (I don't speak it unfortunately); there are so many scholars out there who could really build up a great resource I would imagine, including perhaps from Iran itself, if someone got something going. --Brettz9 05:29, 10 November 2009 (UTC)

Mediawiki[edit]

Actually it's quite easy. Refer to: Manual:Wiki_family and Manual:Interwiki_table. You just define the other language in your interwiki table in mysql. You can follow this example:

INSERT INTO `interwiki` (`iw_prefix`, `iw_url`, `iw_local`, `iw_trans`) VALUES
('nl', 'http://nl.bahaikipedia.org/$1', 1, 0);

All the encyclopedia sites run on 1 instillation of Mediawiki, all the text sites run on 1 instillation, etc. Once you configure it setting up a new subdomain and installation doesn't take more then 10 minutes. David 15:46, 10 November 2009 (UTC)
