The Bahá’í Faith at North Carolina State University at Raleigh

From Bahaipedia
Jump to:navigation, search

The Daily Technician, aka, The Technician, has been the student newspaper of North Carolina State University at Raleigh since 1920. Indeed a scanned repository from 1920 to 1990[1] exists with some 89 "hits" on the Bahá'í Faith.[2] The current live site has material back to 2005[3] and has 4 entries (and one false positive) mentioning Bahá'ís.[4]

The first Bahá'ís in North Carolina date from the turn of the century[5] and the first student newspaper coverage was earlier over at UNC-Chapel Hill where newspaper stories occur from the 1930s. That being said there is significant mention of the religion at NCSU over the years. The first appearance of the student organization of the religion in the newspaper isn't until the Fall of 1962 when there is a "Baha'i Club" having its "first general meeting" that November[6] after advertising about the religion going back to September. The first named speaker is James Brodie in Oct 1964 at the near-campus Bahá'í Center.[7] World Religion Day is first observed January 1965 and the film 'A New Wind' is noted being shown Nov 1969. Inbetween there are several breaks in mention of the religion. However from then until 1979 there are no breaks - at least one mention per school year which runs from the Fall to the Spring. The the level of activity had clearly ebbed in the later 1970s it recovered well in the 1980s with the occasional gap through to 1990. Most of the entries are "Crier" entries - the collection of notices usually of clubs and organizations on campus. Some of these details specifics like people giving talks, or film showings. In addition there are several articles the profile the religion in some way. Additionally there are a few articles that mention the Faith as an aside.

Early phase[edit]

Fall 1962-Spring 1963[edit]

  • Several advertisements from September to October.[8]
  • General meeting at the YMCA Conference room on Sunday Nov 11.[6]

Fall 1964-Spring 1965[edit]

  • Meeting are noted happening off campus at an early Bahá'í Center on Van Dyke Ave.[9]
  • James Brodie (6 Mar 1912 - 15 Dec 2000) spoke at the Van Dyke Center on "The Common Denominator",[7]
  • Human Rights Day was observed at the Van Dyke center in Dec.[10] It was hosted in the News and Observer meeting room and talks were presented by Father Edwin Smith and Fereydoun Jalali on the theme of "The United Nations and Justice for all".
  • The first full article profiling the religion occurred in January because the observance of World Religion Day took place over at the Van Dyke center.[11] Margaret Quance was noted at the chair of the Raleigh assembly. The observance featured Carlotta Holme's talk "The Oneness of Religion", being held at the Erdahl-Cloyd Union. And then presents several short paragraphs profiling the religion.

First prolonged presence[edit]

The first half of the coming decade is a high of several profiles and summaries of the religion amidst a prolonged series of meetings and film presentations. The second half is slower but still persists having meetings at least occasionally per year. However so far as is known, no meeting was advertised and no mention of the religion occurred in 1979-1980.

Fall 1969-Spring 1970[edit]

  • The next article on the religion is soon in coming when there is a profile in November on 'A New Wind', a film about the religion, (note the article was contributed by Fereydoun Jalali.[12] There were cycles of showing the film on campus at the Union Center 7:30pm to 11pm on the 12th of November.
  • An article soon covered that World Religion Day was again noted - this year Jay Scales spoke on "World Religion - Basis for World Education".[13]
  • John McCrary gave a talk "Becoming your true self" on campus.[14]
  • Jane McCants spoke at a meeting.[15]
  • Fereydoun Jalali (presumably) responding to an article with a letter to the editor noting the diversity on campus. He takes the opportunity to share briefly on various teachings of the religion extending the points he felt were made in the article.[16]
  • Patricia Hillow followed up with another letter to the editor.[17] She underscores the sorry need for spiritual virtues in the direction of society so that half-measures and materialism could be avoided.

Fall 1971-Spring 1972[edit]

  • Another profile on the religion noted there were 7 Bahá'ís on campus during the period of fast growth of the religion.[18] The reporter interviews Patricia Hillow, Fereydoun Jalali, and Pat Moore. Several meetings noted lined up in the near future- a showing of another film 'It is just the beginning' in the brickyard is noted, performance of Seals and Crofts at the King Religious Center, and a rap session. Indeed the Seals and Croft's performance is noted next in the paper.[19]

It is also of some note, though not mentioned in the Technician, that PhD student and non-Bahá'í Sandra Kahn lived at the Bahá'í Center off campus during her research and included traveling to South Carolina in this period and later in the summer of 1976.[20] She notes that the Raleigh area community at the time was about 20 people.

Fall 1972-Spring 1973[edit]

A number of meetings are noted held on campus in the Crier notices.[21] However in November "W. B." contributed an article reviewing Bahá'u'lláh and the New Era noting it's status as an introduction, rather than a deep review of the details of the religion, and noting a position of advocacy for social justice.[22] Thereafter again basic notices of meetings in the student union occur for a while.[23] The film Its just beginning (unstated) is noted playing several times in a room of the student union for several days in December.[24] These are followed by general meetings in the early Spring.[25] Then there is coverage of A. K. Kalantar's talk on campus.[26] Ann Jalali was interviewed for A. K. Kalantar's talk at the King Building recalling his pioneering times in South and Central America, visited his family's home in Iran in 1967 and then returned to the U. S. For the remainder of the Spring there were basic notices of meetings.[27]

Fall 1973-Spring 1974[edit]

In the Fall of 1973 there is profile of the religion.[28] Jim Fischer is interviewed reviewing the hopes and history of the religion. The other notice is in early Spring 1974.[29]

Fall 1974-Spring 1975[edit]

Alittle advertising[30] was timed with a meeting with the Duke club of Bahá'ís.[31] Regular notices of meetings continue to November.[32] The mid-November meeting noted William Maxwell giving a talk "History from the Baha'i viewpoint".[33] Meetings continued as they had at the King Center[34] until the January meetings which were held in the Student Union.[35] Mike Lewis talked about one of the Dawnbreakers. Meetings continued.[36] Derald Hendry did a slideshow[37] as meetings continue.[38] The film "Have you heard the news my friend?" was shown in February.[39]

Fall 1975-Spring 1976[edit]

Meetings are noted continuing in the Spring of 1976.[40]

Fall 1976-Spring 1977[edit]

A meeting is noted[41] followed by a letter to the editor by Darian L. Smith who commented on a theme of recent letters to the editor on Christianity.[42]

Fall 1977- Spring 1978[edit]

The fact that Governor Jim Hunt proclaimed World Peace Day and a profile of the history of the observance was made into an article.[43] The Alumni Memorial Building hosted the observance with speakers - Rev. William Jeffries, Douglas Jennette and Jean Scales. It was noted the observance began in 1959 by the Bahá'ís. Another meeting is noted later in October.[44]

Second prolonged presence[edit]

Fall 1980-Spring 1981[edit]

After a gap in mention in 1979-1980 is lightened up with an initial meeting in September, but it is the only one noted for that school year.[45]

Fall 1981-Spring 1982[edit]

After the light start James Turbin, former Methodist minister,[46] and founder of Project Concern International gave a couple of talks.[47] He and his family had already overcome various obstacles.[48] Then in March an interview of Turpin was published highlighting the persecution of Bahá'is in Iran.[49] Indeed the next meeting was a prayer session in support of the Bahá'ís of Iran.[50] A few years later Turpin would give talks over at UNC.

Fall 1982-Spring 1983[edit]

This school year the religion continues to be regularly advertised with meetings[51] and was noted in a story twice - once about Bahá'ís observing Human Rights Day centering around the equality of women and men and somewhat about racial equality.[52] and once in a guest opinion piece by Joy Tucker about the persecution in Iran.[53]

Fall 1983-Spring 1984[edit]

Similarly again regular meetings were noted[54] and this time one article about the religion - about World Peace Day emphasizing the support for the UN.[55]

Fall 1985-Spring 1986[edit]

Since the jump of 1980/'81 and the high jump to 1981/'82 there has been a modest decrease in the coverage of the club's activities for the religion. This continues this school year with no individual articles noting the religion (so far known) though regular meetings are still noted.[56]

Incidental mention[edit]

The decreasing presence in the newspaper continues with basically single and incidental mentions in 1987-1988,[57] 1988-1989 though here brief mention - a Bahá'í's comment in relation to Martin Luther King Day and the fact that the club is a co-sponsor of that year's observance on campus.[58] There is a slight upswing in coverage in 1989-1990 with a few notices or mentions.[59]

Following 1990 there is a break in available coverage until 2005.

Recent coverage[edit]

In the Fall of 2006, a year after coverage begins in January 2005, the first mention of the Bahá'í club reappears with a statistical review of the club.[60] Sources include Omead Ahdieh, Dominic Scimeca and Tenea Miller. The article mostly reviews the broader Bahá'í community noting mostly that the NCSU club has around 7 members and that the UNC club is larger. However starting then there is a Bahá'í club website noted.[61] The next article, still in the Fall of 2006, notes the Baha'i club co-sponsoring a "peace out" event with Jewish and Moslem clubs - Dominic Scimeca is noted in the article.[62]

The next noted mention is in April 2010 when columnist Avani Patel posts a bio of herself noting she is a "proud Hindu" who, among other things, "…attended a Seventh-day Adventist elementary school, a Baha'i middle school and predominantly Catholic high school."[63]

The passage of a State law in 2010 caused NCSU to review religious holiday excused absences noted the Bahá'ís were noted in the calendar used at NCSU[64] - somewhat different from the review in 2002-2003 at UNC.

There are no known mentions of the religion in The Technician since then, so far.
