Talk:Number of Bahá’ís by country
Uploaded numbers[edit]
i've uploaded some numbers. it came from this source: Source: Year 2000 Estimated Baha'i statistics from: David Barrett, World Christian Encyclopedia, 2000; Total population statistics, mid-2000 from Population Reference Bureau ( http://www.prb.org). —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 202.190.136.157 (talk)
Speculation[edit]
This page speculates that the Baha'i Population is at 15 million(!) in a completely unscientific way. This needs to be edited DESPERATELY. Please. We cannot be seen to be making such completely unreasonable statements. The Statistics Department has repeatedly stressed that its figure is 5 million. Its hesitation to increase this figure in so many years should suggest that this is the most honest answer we could state. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 121.44.195.191 (talk)
- Thank you for your great contributions both here and in the book description :) This article has proved to be the hardest as country-wide statistics are not published in a centralized location. However as our database of populations grows so will the accuracy of the total estimated Baha'i population. We'll keep working to make it more accurate :)

Non-Baha'i sources[edit]
This is proving to be a very difficult article. The question is should we include sources that are not Baha'i in the statistics? In places where I can compare statistics from the world Christian encyclopedia to those published by a Baha'i institution the numbers from the world Christian encyclopedia are much higher. For example the united states baha'i website lists 150,000[1] Baha'is while the WCE lists 753,423. In India the official website lists 1.2 million while the WCE lists 1,716,148.[2] Thoughts? David 01:11, 9 October 2007 (MDT)
- Suppose several columns could be included - one for WCE numbers, one for official numbers from the Statistics Department at the Baha'i World Centre. That way, both sources of information are presented, and people who have seen either number quoted in other publications can see which source each number came from. might help to clarify things for those who may be unfamiliar with the Faith. The problem remains, though, of finding both sets of information for each country - given the difficulties inherent for national communities in collecting accurate statistics of their membership, I'm assuming that there are more WCE statistics available than official Baha'i statistics. --Dragfyre 13:28, 9 October 2007 (MDT)
Sorting[edit]
The sorting is all wack! It's sorting columns alphabetically instead of numerically. I think it's because of the footnote references that we've included in the cells. Any ideas on how to fix it? --Dragfyre 08:26, 26 October 2007 (MDT)
- I've been looking for a solution since yesterday, one said that you needed to insert a hidden "sm=n" at the end, which I tried for the Baha'i sources but it didn't work. I will keep messing with it. David
Should we use[edit]
Should we use numbers from this website: http://lexicorient.com/e.o/bahai.htm ? David 04:37, 27 October 2007 (MDT)
Salvaging this article[edit]
Rather than using it to try and put together a full statistical analysis of Baha'i community numbers worldwide (which is arguably impossible because the exact statistics are simply not there), I think the best we can do with this article is simply to illustrate the range of estimates given per country. Present as many estimates as we can find, all together, noting sources for each one. As others have noted, extrapolating from these numbers to come up with a worldwide figure doesn't make sense. Those who want to do so can feel free, if they want, and we can give them data to pick and choose from.
On this note, we can use archive.org to link to the pages that have disappeared, as I've done for a few refs already. I've also added {{UN Population}}, which we can use to display up-to-date population statistics. Dragfyre (talk) 18:59, 6 October 2017 (PDT)
- I was thinking just to delete it. While somewhat interesting none of the links represented very good sources anyway I think. David (talk) 06:59, 7 October 2017 (PDT)
- Well, Adherents is based on the WCE which is widely quoted as a source for statistics. RI is based on a number of different sources, although their methodology seems a bit opaque. I agree that the sources aren't of the highest quality, but it's still interesting to see the range of estimates that do exist. If another source comes around eventually, it could be added too. That, to me, would be a better use for this page—allowing people to compare all the different estimates so that they can come to their own conclusions. Dragfyre (talk) 07:22, 7 October 2017 (PDT)
So, I've gone ahead and updated all countries with data from RI, ARDA and Adherents.com; I've dropped the "percentage" column and replaced it with the standard deviation of all the estimates, since that seems to fit the new purpose of the article.
I've also found a new source: The UN's Demographic Yearbook. These collect statistics from national agencies, so they're roughly equivalent to census numbers. Here are the numbers for the Baha'i Faith:
Country | Est. Baha'i population |
---|---|
Mauritius (2000) | 841 |
St.Helena (1998) | 20 |
Seychelles (2002) | 392 |
South Africa (1996) | 2,264 |
Belize (2000) | 205 |
Bermuda (2001) | 110 |
Canada (2001) | 18,020 |
Jamaica (2001) | 279 |
Netherlands Antilles (2001) | 52 |
Saint-Lucia (2002) | 73 |
Nepal (2001) | 1,211 |
Austria (2001) | 760 |
Finland (1985) | 352 |
Ireland (2002) | 490 |
Lithuania (2001) | 31 |
Micronesia (1994) | 141 |
New Zealand (1996) | 3,111 |
Tonga (1996) | 595 |
Tuvalu (1991) | 161 |
I'll try to include these soon, too. Dragfyre (talk) 18:54, 12 January 2020 (PST)
- More UN figures, this time from the Demographic Statistics Database -- these seem to be from a slightly more up-to-date version of the Demographic Yearbook: Dragfyre (talk) 19:11, 12 January 2020 (PST)

RI gone[edit]
I'm thinking of removing all http://www.religiousintelligence.co.uk links as the site is gone. Will default to info from www.thearda.com and worldpopulationreview.com Ernobe (talk) 07:30, 27 August 2023 (PDT)
- No problem, it wasn't a great source anyway, and most of all it's out of date (and won't be updated since the site is offline as you said). I originally included it a long while ago since there weren't a lot of independent estimates out there, but nowadays there are far better sources to use. Dragfyre (talk) 00:10, 1 September 2023 (PDT)
