Dr. Stephen Vickers was born in Birmingham, England, and raised in the nearby town of Solihull. He became a Bahá'í in Brighton, while studying politics at Sussex University. His career has been in the examination sector of the education world, working for various exam boards until becoming, consecutively, chief executive of three institutions whose work relates to examinations and training. He has recently retired from the post of Chief Executive of the Vocational Training Charitable Trust, which role involved a lot of overseas travel. In his Bahá'í work, he has served on bodies linking the Bahá'í world to the world of education, currently BREA (Bahá’í Religious Education Agency), also known as the R.E. Task Force. He represents the Faith on the R.E. Council. He is also currently serving on the (Bahá’í) Council for England. In the past he has been a Bahá'í representative at international conferences where his doctorate, on the law of the sea, has been relevant. He currently lives in Woodstock, Oxfordshire, and serves the wider community by working part-time as a Justice of the Peace. From Woodstock he also runs the West Oxfordshire Bahá'í Bookshop, (which is an independent arm of the Warwick Bahá’í Bookshop). Books are supplied over a wide area of south-central England, and the Bookshop also serves the Scottish Summer School. He has recently taken on the task of ensuring the continued availability of the Bahá'í titles produced by Intellect Books.
His American wife, Rebecca, is an author and editor of children's books. They have two offspring: their daughter, Alice, is a lawyer, while their son, Thomas, is an actor based in America.
