Stephen Powers
Dr. Stephen Powers (June 10, 1936 - March 20, 2023) was an American Bahá’í who served as an Auxiliary Board member.
Biography[edit]
Powers was born in Bakersfield, California, in 1936. He was raised in Bakersfield and moved to Yuma, Arizona, in 1955 where he attended the University of Arizona to study music and played with the Universities Symphony Orchestra.[1][2] He was an active member of the Arizona Bahá’í community serving as Chairman of the Southwestern Area Youth Committee as of 1955,[3] and by 1976 he was serving as an assistant to the Auxiliary Board.[4] In 1977 he was appointed as an Auxiliary Board member.[5]
In 1978 Powers completed postgraduate studies at the University of Arizona receiving a PhD in Education and he later undertook additional post-doctoral studies at the University of Michigan and Oxford Univesity. In his professional career he became a High School teacher teaching Spanish, English, and History and later worked as an adjunct professor at the University of Arizona lecturing on statistics and educational psychology. He also became an evaluation specialist for the Tucson Unified School District, and founded the company Creative Research Associates,[2] and made extensive international travels as a consultant evaluating federal programs. His travels included visiting Egypt and Yemen for the United States Agency for International Development, Azerbaijan for the World Bank, Kosovo for the United Nations Development Programme, Albania for Health for Humanity, and Uganda and Tanzania for LEARN Inc.[2]
In 2016 Powers retired and settled in Tucson where he served on the Board of the United Nations for Southern Arizona and was active in his local Bahá’í community. He passed away in Tucson in 2023 due to complications after a surgery.[2]
