Riaz Rabbání
Riaz Rabbání was a brother of Shoghi Effendi who was ultimately declared a Covenant-breaker.
Biography[edit]
Rabbání's father was Mírzá Hádí Shírází, a relative of the Báb, and his mother was Ḍiyá'iyyih Khánum the daughter of ‘Abdu’l-Bahá. He was the youngest son in the family.[1] Rabbání was a surname ‘Abdu’l-Bahá granted to Shoghi Effendi as he had requested a surname to distinguish him from his cousins who went by Afnán and his siblings also used it.[2]
He conducted some tasks to assist Shoghi Effendi in his position as Guardian however by 1946 William Maxwell was performing duties he had undertaken previously.[3] In 1951 he began communicating with Covenant-breaker Majdu’d-Din prompting Shoghi Effendi to send the following cable in December that year:
". . . personal contact recently established my own treacherous, despicable brother Riaz with Majdi'd-Din, redoubtable enemy Faith, former henchman Muhammad-'Ali, Archbreaker Baha'u'llah's Covenant. Convey information all National Assemblies."[4]
Rabbání later visited Cyprus four times to meet with Jalal Azal in order to share information, with Azal later assisting with the composition of books attacking and denigrating the Bahá’í Faith.[5]
