Quito is the capital and most populous city of Ecuador. Lying at an elevation of 9350 ft above sea level, it is the second highest official capital city in the world, as well as the closest to the equator. It is located in the Guayllabamba river basin, on the eastern slopes of Pichincha, an active stratovolcano in the Andes Mountains. In November 2008, Quito was the site of one of the 41 regional conferences of the Five Year Plan.
