Quito is the capital and most populous city of Ecuador.[1] Lying at an elevation of 9350 ft above sea level, it is the second highest official capital city in the world, as well as the closest to the equator.[2] It is located in the Guayllabamba river basin, on the eastern slopes of Pichincha,[3] an active stratovolcano in the Andes Mountains. In November 2008, Quito was the site of one of the 41 regional conferences of the Five Year Plan.[4]
