Peter Vuyiya (March 16, 1922 - June 7, 1998) was a Kenyan Bahá’í who served as a National Spiritual Assembly member, Continental Counselor, and member of the International Teaching Center.
Biography[edit]
Vuyiya was born in Kenya and raised as a Quaker. He moved to Uganda to attend Makarere University and was able to enroll in Cambridge University in England where he completed his bachelor's degree in agriculture. He then returned to Kenya where in 1948 he began working for the Kenyan Civil Service as District Agricultural Officer and he later became Provincial Agricultural Officer.[1]
In 1953 Vuyiya became a Bahá’í after hearing a Bahá’í quoting the book Bahá’u’lláh and the New Era to a colleague at work. At some point he moved to America where he studied at Oregon State University and completed a master's degree in agricultural education and in 1961 he helped establish the Local Spiritual Assembly of Corvallis, Oregon, serving on the new body.[2] He then returned to Kenya where in 1969 he was elected to the National Spiritual Assembly of Kenya and returned to his position with the Civil Service. He retired from the Civil Service in 1972 and went on to work for the Ministry of Lands and Settlements becoming their Chief Technical Officer in Nairobi.[1]
Vuyiya was appointed a Counselor for Central and East Africa in 1973. In 1980 the Continental Boards for Africa were merged and five year terms were introduced and Vuyiya was appointed to the new body. He was reappointed for a second five year term in 1985 but did not complete his term as he was appointed to the International Teaching Centre in 1988 serving one five year term,[1] returning to Kenya in 1993.[3]
The Universal House of Justice cabled the following after his passing:
BEAR ELOQUENT TESTIMONY STERLING QUALITIES WHICH CHARACTERIZED HIGHLY VALUED EFFORTS THIS DISTINGUISHED PROMOTER FAITH[1]
