The National Spiritual Assembly of the Bahá’ís of South Africa is the body responsible for administrating the Bahá’í communities of South Africa and Saint Helena.[1]
History[edit]
A National Spiritual Assembly with its seat in Johannesburg had been in existence continually since 1956. The first Assembly for this region was the National Spiritual Assembly of South and West Africa which included several other countries and territories. The name of the Assembly was changed on March 27, 1987 to the National Spiritual Assembly of the Bahá’ís of South Africa.[2]
During the administration of the South and West Africa Assembly independent National Spiritual Assemblies were formed for three South African Bantustans (which were semi independent states within the country); Bophuthatswana, Ciskei and Transkei. In 1994 Bantustan's were abolished and in 1995 the National Spiritual Assemblies of the Bantustans were disbanded with their communities coming under the jurisdiction of the National Spiritual Assembly of South Africa.[3][4]
