Muhammad-Taqí Baraghání

From Bahaipedia
Jump to:navigation, search

Hájí Mullá Muhammad-Taqí Baraghání (d.1847) was a prominent and powerful cleric in Qazvín. He pressured Fath-'Alí Sháh into waging war with Russia leading to disastrous consequences. He had great hatred towards Bábí’s as well as Shaykhí’s and encouraged persecution of them. He was disgusted to find out that his daughter-in-law and niece Táhirih became a Bábí. A Shaykhí with Bábí sympathies murdered him. Táhirih was blamed for it, but soon all Bábís were seen as the culprits. His death lead to many people seeing the Bábí religion as a dangerous cult of heretics.
