Modesta Hvide (August 30, 1900 - August 8, 1998) was a Norwegian Bahá’í who served as a National Spiritual Assembly and Auxiliary Board member.

Background[edit]

Hvie was born Modesta Hille in Osteroy, Norway, in 1900 and she married Johan Gustav Hvide at some point.[1] She had become a Bahá’í as of the 1950's and in 1957 she was elected to the National Spiritual Assembly of Scandinavia and Finland when the body was formed.[2] As of 1960 she had been appointed as an Auxiliary Board member and that year she assisted in the running of a Teaching Conference in Oslo, Norway, alongside Adelbert Muhlschlegel held shortly before the National Convention for Scandinavia and Finland,[3] and she was also re-elected to the National Assembly at the Convention.[4]

In 1962 she was elected to the independent National Spiritual Assembly of Norway,[5] participated in the joint Scandinavia-Finland summer school held in southern Sweden,[6] and she also spoke at the first Finnish summer school later the same year.[7] In 1963 the Universal House of Justice ruled that a Bahá’í could not serve as an Assembly member and Auxiliary Board member concurrently and Hvide continued to serve on the Auxiliary Board for Europe rather than the National Assembly of Norway,[8] serving as a Protection Board member with the jurisdiction of Scandinavia and Finland as of 1968.[9] She continued to serve as Board member until at least 1973.[10]

Hvide passed away in Bergen, Norway, in 1998.[1]
