Maina Mkandawire (b. 1959) is a Bahá’í who is currently serving as a Continental Counselor for Africa.
Biography[edit]
Mkandawire studied at the University of Malawi in her youth then began working as a teacher in order to provide support for her parents and siblings. She married Justin and they had three children and adopted two.[1]
In 1993 Mkandawire established the pre-school Bambinos in Lilongwe establishing it as a secular institution based on universal values present in the Bahá’í Faith. She worked additional part-time jobs in order to fund the school, and was later able to secure a bank loan after bank representatives were impressed by an inspection of the school. Bambinos later expanded into providing primary and secondary education.[1]
In 2000 Mkandawire was appointed to the Continental Board of Counselors for Africa by the Universal House of Justice and she has been appointed for several successive terms. In 2017 she worked with colleagues to establish the University of Lilongwe,[1] and as of 2018 she was working with the Bambino Foundation which assists community schools across Malawi.[2]
