Biography[edit]

Hénuzet became a Bahá’í in Brussels in 1948[1] and in 1949 he chaired a session at the Second European Teaching Conference in Brussels translating a summary of a talk given by John Robarts.[2] In 1951 he delivered a keynote talk at the Fourth European Teaching Conference on building Bahá’í communities and was introduced as having had experience in the field due to his service on the Brussels Local Spiritual Assembly which had formed in 1948,[3][4] and he spoke again at the 1952 European Teaching Conference.[5]

In December 1951 Hénuzet was appointed to a Teaching Committee for the Benelux by the European Teaching Committee being assigned responsibility for Belgium alongside Leá Nys,[6] and in 1954 he was appointed to the newly established Auxiliary Board for Europe assigned to work directly under the Hands of the Cause Hermann Grossmann and Adelbert Mühlschlegel.[7] In March 1956 he wrote to Shoghi Effendi and received a reply written on his behalf requesting that he convey his loving greetings at the inauguration of a Ḥaẓíratu’l-Quds and also included the following postscript written by Shoghi Effendi himself:

"May the Almighty bless your highly meritorious efforts, guide and sustain you always, and aid you to win great and memorable victories in the days to come. Your true brother, Shoghi."[8]

In April 1957 a National Spiritual Assembly for the Benelux Countries was formed at a Convention held in Brussels and Hénuzet delivered a talk on the Ten Year Crusade at the Convention and was elected to the National Spiritual Assembly.[9] In September 1957 he spoke on the Administrative Order at a Summer School in France held to prepare the community for the formation of its National Assembly the following year.[10] In 1958 he spoke on Spiritual Unity at a World Religion Day event in Brussels,[11] the first National Convention of France in Paris,[12] and the second Benelux convention in Holland.[13]

In 1959 Hénuzet spoke at the Benelux Convention telling the community that it had been set the goal of establishing independent National Spiritual Assemblies in Belgium, Holland, and Luxembourg by 1963 so that they could participate in the establishment of the Universal House of Justice,[14] and in July that year he participated in the first Benelux Summer School which was held in Luxembourg facilitating a session on the Hands of the Cause and Auxiliary Board.[15]

In January 1960 Hénuzet spoke at a deepening conference held in Antwerp on the significance of Shoghi Effendi and the unity of the community since his passing.[16] In December 1960 he spoke at a consultation conference held in Liege on the Covenant.[17] In 1962 the National Spiritual Assembly of the Benelux Countries broke up into independent Assemblies and Hénuzet was elected chairman of the inaugural National Spiritual Assembly of Belgium.[18] In July 1964 Hénuzet chaired a consultation session at a European Teaching Conference held to launch the Nine Year Plan as Auxiliary Board member.[19] In 1964 the Universal House of Justice announced individuals could no longer serve as Auxiliary Board members and on Assemblies and in 1965 Hénuzet was re-elected to the National Spiritual Assembly of Belgium continuing his service on the Assembly rather than the Auxiliary Board.[20] In November 1967 he met with the Mayor of Monaco at a Proclamation Conference representing the Belgian National Spiritual Assembly.[21]

In June 1968 the Universal House of Justice established the Continental Boards of Counselors which was an Institution which was to undertake the duties of the Hands of the Cause indefinitely and Hénuzet was appointed as an inaugural member of the body for an indefinite term.[22] In 1980 the Universal House of Justice introduced five year term limits to the Continental Boards and Hénuzet was appointed for that year for a new term and also appointed the Trustee of the Continental Fund,[23] and he was appointed for another three terms before completing his service in the year 2000.[24]
