Dr. Kaushal Kishore Bhargava (1896 - 1974) was an Indian Bahá’í who served on the National Spiritual Assembly of India.
Biography[edit]
Bhargava was born in Jaipur, Rajasthan, in 1896 into an Orthodox Hindu family of the Brahmin caste. He was interested in perhaps becoming a clergyman in his youth but instead completed a Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Allahabad. He was introduced to the Bahá’í Faith by Professor Pritam Singh while at the university and became a Bahá’í.[2]
After graduating from the University of Allahabad Bhargava completed a Master's degree at the Hindu University of Benares and then received a scholarship to complete a PhD in England. While traveling to Europe he went on pilgrimage and met ‘Abdu’l-Bahá who advised him to change his course of study and after arriving in the United Kingdom he completed a PhD which allowed him to work in the sugar industry. While in England he met Shoghi Effendi who was studying at Oxford and John Esslemont.[2]
After returning to India with his PhD Bhargava embarked on his professional career and was also an active Bahá’í teacher engaging in correspondence with Prime Minister Nehru of India about the Faith. He was elected to the National Spiritual Assembly in 1958. At some point he married Shyamdulari who was also from a Brahmin family but became a Bahá’í.[2]
Bhargava passed away in 1974 and the Universal House of Justice conveyed the following message after his passing:
SADDENED PASSING DR. BHARGAVA. LONG RECORD SERVICE INDIA LOVINGLY REMEMBERED. ASSURE RELATIVES FRIENDS OUR ARDENT PRAYERS SHRINES BESEECH PROGRESS SOUL ABHA KINGDOM.[2]
