Isabel Pavón de Calderón (October 25, 1929 - March 30, 2000) was a Bahá’í who served as a Continental Counselor for the Americas.

Biography[edit]

Calderón was born as Isabel Pavón in the Imbabura province of Ecuador in 1929.[1] Her brother Raúl Pavón became a Bahá’í in May 1958, her parents became Bahá’ís in 1960,[2][3] and she declared in 1961.[1]

In 1964 Calderón was elected to the National Spiritual Assembly of Ecuador and she served on the body for thirteen years.[1] As of 1966 she was serving as assistant secretary of the National Assembly,[4][5] and in 1977 she helped the National Spiritual Assembly secure permission to establish an Ecuador Bahá’í radio station from the government.[6] In 1974 she married Gonzalo Elias Calderón Encalada and they remained married until his passing in 1980.[1]

By 1979 Calderón had been appointed as an Auxiliary Board member and was serving as the legal representative of the National Spiritual Assembly of Ecudaor and that year she taught at a Bahá’í Institute in Otavalo.[7] In 1980 she visited Colombia and spoke on the role women were playing in the Bahá’í community of Ecuador.[8] In 1983 the Universal House of Justice appointed Calderón as a Counselor for the Americas following the passing of her brother Raúl,[9] and she was appointed for a full five year term in 1985.[10]

Calderón was re-elected to the National Spiritual Assembly of Ecuador after completing her term as Counselor and served until her passing in 2000.[1]
