Dr. Hushang Ahdieh (August 1929 - February 6, 1997) was a Persian Bahá’í who pioneered to Africa where he served as a National Spiritual Assembly and Auxiliary Board member and a Continental Counselor. In his career he was a dentist.
Biography[edit]
Ahdieh was born in Hamadan, Iran, to Eshagh and Monireh Ahdieh. His mother was from a Jewish family and her parents became Bahá’ís shortly after arriving in Hamadan. His father was also from a Jewish family and became a Bahá’í as a young man. The Ahdieh's moved to Tehran while he was a child and he completed his schooling and studied dentistry at Tehran University there, graduating as a dentist in 1954.[1]
In May 1955 Ahdieh decided to pioneer to serve the goals the Guardian set for the Ten Year Crusade and he was able to move to Eritrea with the help of his maternal uncle Heshmatollah Farhoumand settling in Asmara where he established a dental practice and in 1956 he was first elected to the Local Spiritual Assembly of Asmara.[1]
In 1961 the seat of the National Spiritual Assembly of North East Africa was moved to Addis-Ababa from Cairo and Ahdieh was elected to the body and he went on to serve terms as its secretary and treasurer. In 1968 he was appointed as an Auxiliary Board member for Protection responsible for Central and East Africa and in 1973 he was appointed as a Counselor for Central and East Africa. In 1978 he decided to leave Asmara and settled in Bangui, Central African Republic, in consultation with the International Teaching Centre.[1]
In 1980 the Continental Boards for Africa were merged into one body with five year terms being introduced and Ahdieh was appointed to the new Continental Board for Africa. He was appointed as Trustee of the Continental Fund for Africa in 1983 and he was reappointed as Counsellor for two more terms in 1985 and 1990. In 1987 ‘Alí-Muhammad Varqá appointed him the Deputy of Ḥuqúqu’lláh for Central and East Africa and he served in that role until 1996.[1]
In 1997 Ahdieh passed away and the Universal House of Justice conveyed the following message:
PROFOUNDLY GRIEVED PASSING DEARLY LOVED SERVANT FAITH, HUSHANG AHDIEH. HIS INDEFATIGABLE PIONEER SERVICES AFRICA, INCLUDING OVER TWO DECADES MEMBERSHIP CONTINENTAL BOARD COUNSELLORS THAT CONTINENT, AND TRUSTEE ITS FUND UNFORGETTABLE. HIS SELF-EFFACEMENT, HIS CAPACITY PROMOTE CONCORD, AND HIS WISDOM COMBINED WITH LOVE EXEMPLIFIED IN DISCHARGE HIS SACRED RESPONSIBILITIES WILL REMAIN SOURCE INSPIRATION HIS THROUGHOUT AFRICA HOLD BEFITTING GATHERINGS THEIR COMMUNITIES.[1]
