Habíbu’lláh Awjí.

Habíbu’lláh Awjí (1924 - November 16, 1982) was a Persian Bahá’í who was martyred in Iran.

Biography[edit]

Awjí was born into a Muslim family in Shiraz in 1924. In his youth he was a member of the radical Islamic group Hezb-e-Baradaran-Islami and participated in the destruction of the House of the Báb in 1955.[1]

Despite his initial hostility to the religion Awjí became a Bahá’í in 1959 and in 1979 his home was raided and set on fire and he was shot in his arm during a period of violence against Bahá’ís. In April, 1982, he was arrested and held in Adilabad prison until being executed by hanging on November 16, 1982. His body was not returned to his family for burial and they learnt of his execution when it was published in a national newspaper.[1]
