Grace Challis

Grace Challis (d. October, 1948) was an early British Bahá’í who served on the National Spiritual Assembly of the British Isles.
Background[edit]
Challis was a nurse in her professional career and a practising Quaker in her personal life. She was introduced to the Faith as she worked as a nurse and was employed at the Home Sanatorium in Southbourne where John Esslemont was Chief Medical Officer. Esslemont spoke about the Faith at the Sanatorium and Challis became a Bahá’í.[1] She served on the Local Spiritual Assembly of Bournemouth when it was established.[2]
In 1923 the Home Sanatorium closed down and Challis established the nursing home Ferndown Lodge near Bournemouth. She hosted Bahá’í meetings at her nursing home and offered care to Bahá’í patients at discounted rates.[1] She was elected to the National Spiritual Assembly of the British Isles in the 1920's and served on the body for fifteen years.[3]
Challis passed away in Bournemouth in 1948.[3]
