Early in his career Borland worked as an industrial supervisor for the production of explosives.[1] He was a member of the Bahá’í Faith as of 1965 and he was serving on the Local Spiritual Assembly of Lawrence, Kansas, when the body was incorporated in November that year.[2] He served as chairman of the Assembly for many years and was later appointed to the Kansas District Teaching Committee and served as committee chairman for three years.[1]
As of 1974 Borland was aiming to complete a degree in political science and history at Kansas University[1] and in January that year he was appointed as an Auxiliary Board member for North America and assigned to the states Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and South Dakota.[3] He continued to serve as Board member until at least 1980,[4] being assigned as Propagation Board member for the states Kansas, Missouri, Iowa, and Nebraska that year.[5]
