Coverage of the Baha'i Faith in the Cornell Daily Sun
From Bahá'í Period of Historical mentions, the the Cornell Daily Sun, an independent daily newspaper published by students at Cornell University and hired employees, from at least Feb 1910, began to mention the Baha'i Faith. The modern website is at CornellSun.com. There are gaps in the coverage such as most of the year 1909.[1] There are also years of the publication have yet to be digitized - as of Oct 2014 these include Fall 1947–Spring 1950, Fall 1966/Spring 1967, Fall 1974-Spring 1978, Fall 1979-Spring 1980, Fall 1981–Spring 1989.[2]
Sporadic meetings[edit]
Though there is occasional mention of a club speakers are spread out across several years.
Keeping in mind there is a gap in 1909,[1] and the limitations of OCR scans and searching, the first mention of the Baha'i Faith in the Cornell Sun occurred Feb 19, 1910 by Mrs Mary H(Hanford) Ford will gave a talk in Barnes Hall auditorium on campus on Feb 19, 1910.[3] She followed up by making an appearance in another talk afterwards.[4]
- In 1920 a student of Cornel entered the competition for the Baha'i Temple in Wilmette and had an exhibit at the library.[5]
- Fazel Mazanderani and Ahmad Schrab(sic) with two talks on 9 Oct, 1920.[6] A quote from his talk was printed the following 11th.[7]
- Howard Colby Ives gave a talk at an evening meeting coming up of the locall unitarian church about Oct 17, 1926.[8]
- Baha'i students of Cornell gather at Willard Straight Hall with a talk by R. C. Collison, professor of Agronomy, on the next Sunday after Jan 13, 1928.[9]
- Ruhi Effendi Afnan travels through March 1928 and gives a talk for the club at Barnes Hall the coming Monday evening.[10] Another talk was the following week before the Mens and Womens Cosmopolitan clubs.[11]
- A B. McDaniel gives an update on the Baha'i Temple in May 1938.[12]
We enter here the first significant cap in what has been digitized.[2] As soon as the record continues so does Baha'i mention in the Fall of 1950 witha notice that Jameson Bond is giving a talk at the Barnes Hall Library Nov 1950.[13]
- Joy Earle gives a talk Nov 1951 in Barnes Hall.[14]
- Hamilton Niss presents a talk in the Anabel Taylor Blue rm Nov 1960.[15]
- A talk reviewing "Hinduism and the Judeo-Christian tradition" is sponsored by the Baha'i World Faith club Feb. 1961.[16]
- Marguerite McKay Firoozi gave a talk a reinterpritation of Christian teachings in Anabel Taylor hall March 1961.[17]
Increasing pace of meetings[edit]
The period of development in the presence of the religion in the Cornell Sun enters another gap in digitized coverage for the moment in 1967.[2] However from Winter 1968 meetings begin to pick up. While previously years or at least months often passed between events a few meetings a semester occur in 1968 onward.
- Jan 1968 the club held a meeting in the Anabel Taylor Blue rm.[18]
- A. K. Kalantar gave a talk in April 1968 in the Straight Art rm.[19]
- The Baha'i club held a meeting in Nov 1970.[22] Another meeting of the Club was held in the Straight North rm the following spring in early[23] and late March 1971 in the Straight International Lounge.[24]
- Then the club meets that Fall in early[25] and late Sept. in Straight Art Lounge[26] and in Nov in the Straight International Lounge.[27] Peter Smith, grad student in economics, gives a talk early Dec[28] and a meeting next week hosted by Pat Hasson.[29]
- It is almost a year before the next advertised meeting in Nov 1972 though having several in several days.[30][31][32] and on into Dec.[33] (and discussing Seals and Crofts.)[34] and in January 1973 the club is meeting in Straight Loft II discussing "Christ and Baha'u'llah"[35] and on into February.[36]
- From March 1973 there are about weekly meetings with two meetings per weekend in various rooms.[37] In April they have a session on chanting and meditation.[38] In May there is a meeting on "Barriers to Human Unity".[39]
- The pace of meetings slows down after Spring 1973 though there is one per semeseter for some time. In Nov the Baha'is of Ithaca sponsor a panel discussion in the Central Fire Station Community Room on Green Street.[40] Loretta Haynbes speaks at the Women's Community Building in Feb 1974.[41] A brief "Happy Naw Ruz" in March 1974.[42]
Most of the rest of the 1970s enter a current gap of digitized availability of the Cornell Sun[2] and the 1980s and onward, when the awareness of the Faith generally was raised by news of the persecution in Iran, is unavailable. And so far there have been no significant profiles of the religion or even comments from non-Baha'is on the presence of the religion on campus published.
Modern coverage[edit]
After a gap from the 1970s through to an undetermined date in the early 2000s the first mention of the religion is in 2002.[43]
First, Baha'is were lead cosponsors of a "crop-walk" in Oct 2002.[44]
A bit oddly placed was a display about the Baha'i Faith at Straight Memorial rm amidst country-based displays for the International Women's Faith in Nov 2002.[45]
The is a choped off article that briefly mentions the Baha'i Gardens in Haifa in Nov 2004[46] and Baha'is were briefly noted among many at a multi-faith service in later Nov 2004.[47]
The last available mention known is when the Baha'is cosponsored an interfaith dinner in April 2006.[48]
