Continental Board for South America

Continental Board for South America, 1975.

The Continental Board of Counsellors for South America was a body responsible for protection and propagation of the Bahá'í Faith in South America, and for appointing members to Auxiliary Boards across South America. Its membership was appointed by the Universal House of Justice.

It was succeeded by the Continental Board of the Americas.

History[edit]

The Continental Board of South America was formed along with ten other Boards in 1968. It was established by the Universal House of Justice so that the functions that the Hands of the Cause performed could continue to be carried out despite the Bahá'í community being unable to appoint additional Hands.[1]

The Board met for the first time from August 12 to 18, 1968, with Hand of the Cause Jalal Khazeh in Cochabamba, Bolivia,[2] and called a Regional South American Proclamation Conference at the request of Hand of the Cause Raḥmatu’lláh Muhájir which was held in Porto Alegre, Brazil, from September 5 to 7, 1969.[3]

In 1980 the Continental Boards of North, South, and Central America were merged to form the Continental Board of the Americas.[4]
