Century of Light is a document published by the Bahá’í World Centre in 2001. It was produced at the request of and under the supervision of the Universal House of Justice.[1]
The Universal House of Justice wrote the following regarding the documents purpose:
The purpose of the document, which quotes extensively from the Bahá’í Writings and the related commentaries of the Guardian, is to provide members of the Faith with a perspective on two defining processes that unfolded during the twentieth century: on the one hand, the sequence of events that made the unification of humanity the principal feature of modern history and, on the other, the emergence from obscurity of the Cause of God and its Administrative Order.[1]
Background[edit]
‘Abdu’l-Bahá referred to the century spanning 1900 to 2000 as the century of light.[2]
The document was prepared at the request of the Universal House of Justice primarily as a resource for Bahá’í's to study although it stated that there was no objection to sharing the document with non-Bahá’í friends on an individual basis. It was noted that the document was not intended to be used for proclamation or presented to public figures or the media.[1]
In a review of the document Firuz Kazemzadeh described it as providing a Bahá’í interpretation of the preceding century in twelve brief chapters.[3]
