Calgary is the largest city in the Canadian province of Alberta; the population of its metropolitan area is the fifth highest in Canada at 1,079,310 people.[1]
History[edit]
The first Bahá'í to live in Calgary was likely Doris Skinner who pioneered to the city in April 1939. She found work within two weeks and soon began holding firesides to teach the Faith.[2] Later in the year a Bahá'í study group attended by non-Bahá'ís began to develop, and began meeting regularly in September 1939.[3][4]
Mariette Bolton visited Calgary in 1939 and gave a talk that was broadcast on the radio.[5] In 1942 Evelyn Cliff, a teacher, and Anne McGee, a youth, both pioneered from Vancouver to Calgary to assist Skinner in her teaching work.[6] By 1943 there were five Bahá'ís in Calgary, with Clifford Gardner also pioneering to the city from Vancouver.[7][8]
In 1944 Amelia Collins visited Calgary briefly and met with the pioneers resulting in plans for a study class.[9] A commemoration of the Bahá'í Centenary was broadcast on Calgary radio the same year.[10]
Several Bahá'í speakers visited Calgary to give talks on the Faith while performing teaching tours of Canada in the 1940's with Reginald King visiting in 1945,[11] Charles Reed Bishop and his wife visiting in 1946[12] and Emeric Sala visiting in 1947.[13]
Four Calgary locals converted to the Faith at the same time in 1947[14] and the Local Spiritual Assembly of Calgary was established in 1949.[15]
