On Bahaipedia certain pages will be prefixed by a word followed by a colon (:), as an example this page is Bahaipedia:Namespace. The word before the colon (Bahaipedia) is the namespace. A namespace is a way to separate content which is meant to be encyclopedic and appears in the main namespace (titles will not have a prefix or colon in them) from other types of content. This
The following namespaces are in use:
- Bahaipedia: Content specific to the website as a project, describing how it is organized or used, what editorial policies it follows.
- Category: Lists of pages organized by a common topic or theme.
- File: Media content like images, music files, PDFs, etc.
- Help: Content meant to guide people in using Bahaipedia, interacting with the website, learning to edit, etc.
- Infobox: An infobox is an information box to be displayed on the right side of the page.
- Main: Encyclopedic content. No prefix is used in this namespace.
- MediaWiki: Content necessary for the proper display of content by MediaWiki software; editing permission is generally available only to administrators.
- Module: Lua scripts used to display content.
- Portal: Organized lists of content, meant to be another way for users to find and navigate through content on the website.
- Template: Content which can be duplicated onto other pages, with optional input parameters.
- Useful Formatting Codes: Some useful formatting codes.
- User: Pages that identify individual Bahaipedia users.
Each of these namespaces has an associated talk namespace which contains talk pages for the discussion of pages.
The following sections give further details about certain namespaces.
Main[edit]
This classification of articles that applies to most encyclopedic articles. The prefix "Main" is not applied to these articles. The title of the page suffices. Examples are Thornton Chase, Denver, Colorado, and 1844. The article is expected to provide information about the title subject. They are not how-to articles.
Editors can create a new article by:
- Entering the desired subject in the "Search" box.
- Verify that the subject is not already covered in another article.
- Click on the suggested article name in the text at the top of the search.
- Start typing your article in the box provided.
Bahaipedia[edit]
The Bahaipedia namespace (also called "the Project namespace") provides information about Bahaipedia.
Pages in this namespace will always have the prefix Bahaipedia:. They can also be reached by alias B: or the standard (for any MediaWiki site) prefix Project:.
The Bahaipedia namespace contains important information about the rules, policies and guidelines on the site.
- Category:Bahaipedia official policy contains important rules that are widely accepted, and procedures for important processes such as deletion; there are very few of those
- Category:Bahaipedia guidelines contains consensual rules-of-thumb that are not strict, but are considered by most Bahaipedians to be useful most of the time
Category[edit]

File[edit]
The "File:" prefix refers to files stored in Bahaimedia resource.
- Permitted file types: tiff, tif, png, gif, jpg, jpeg, webp, pdf, svg, djvu, midi, ogg, mp4, ogv, oga, flac, opus, wav, webm, mp3, mid, mpg, mpeg. Files and images or other media are often inserted in articles.
The process for creating and using these items is described in more detail in Help:Files
Help[edit]
Several "Help" articles exist to aid the editor in formatting an article. These pages will generally provide additional information beyond what is provided here. The currently useful Help articles are:
- Help:Category
- Help:Citation style
- Help:Shortened footnotes
- Help:Contents
- Help:Disambiguation
- Help:Edit summary
- Help:Editing
- Help:Footnotes
- Help:Template
Other suggested articles which need to be developed are:
This is not a comprehensive list if you see additional needs.
Module[edit]
The "Module:" prefix identifies a script used to verify various display and data extraction commands in Bahaipedia. These are functions that the average editor should avoid updating. Leave it to the experts.
Template[edit]
- See also: Help:Template
Templates often look like text boxes with a different background color from that of normal text. They are in the template namespace, i.e. they are defined in pages with "Template:" in front of the name.
For example, consider the template Template:Citation needed (follow the link to see the page where it can be edited). To insert the template's content into an article, type {{Citation needed}} in the wiki page ( {{Citation needed}} is called a template tag ). Every article with that tag in it will display the following text:
This technique is commonly known as transclusion. For a table of some useful templates, see Bahaipedia:Template messages.
With the template namespace it is possible to include the contents of a page in that namespace within a page in a different namespace, using double curly braces around the template title (for example, {{title}} would import Template:Title). This is used for many things, such as placing recurring or boilerplate messages, creating navigational boxes, and so on.
User[edit]
The User: prefix is used to link to the profile of a frequent editor, user, or other entity associated with Bahaipedia. Entering "User:" in the search window will bring up a list of the currently identified users. Not all editors are listed in this way. Some may be listed with just their names while others are not listed at all.
