Albany is the capital of the U.S. state of New York.

A Bahá’í community was established in Albany in the 1930s, however it was not firmly established until the 1970s.

History[edit]

In 1935 the Bahá’í National Publicity Committee of the United States & Canada submitted a press release covering the progress of the construction of the Bahá’í House of Worship in Wilmette, Illinois, to a local Albany newspaper with the paper approving it for publication.[1]

Zeah Holden pioneered to the city in the 1930's and began teaching efforts and in 1937 Dorothy Baker, Marzieh Carpenter, and Julia Goldman visited to speak at public meetings on the Faith.[2][3] In 1938 Mildred Mottahedeh visited and delivered a series of public talks on the Faith with steps being taken to establish an Albany Bahá’í Group during her visit,[4] with the Group forming and appointing Holden as Secretary the following year.[5]

In 1946 Duncan McAlear visited Albany during a teaching tour of New York,[6] and in 1947 the Albany Bahá’ís hosted a public dinner which resulted in a study class being formed.[7] Despite teaching efforts the Bahá’í community of Albany lapsed with the city having no resident Bahá’ís in 1953,[8] and it was not until 1955 that a pioneer re-opened the city to the Faith.[9] In 1955 a teaching conference for the Bahá’ís of Eastern New York was held in Albany.[10]

Teaching progress was slow throughout the 1950's and 1960's and in 1971 the National Teaching Committee of the United States made establishing a Local Spiritual Assembly in the city a goal of the American Bahá’í community.[11] In 1976 sessions to train Bahá’ís on how to undertake personal teaching through firesides were held in Albany,[12] and as of 1977 a Local Spiritual Assembly of Albany had been established. That year the Albany Assembly hosted a Teaching Conference at with Nathan Rutstein, Javidukht Khadem, and Dwight Allen spoke.[13]
