Abidjan is a major city of Côte d'Ivoire serving as the countries economic capital. It is the sixth largest city in Africa by population.

The Bahá’í Faith has been present in Abidjan since 1955 with a community being firmly established in the 1960's. It has been the site of several notable conferences which Bahá’í representatives have participated in.

History[edit]

Abidjan was the first city in Côte d'Ivoire in which the Bahá’í Faith was established with Egyptian Bahá’í Labíb Isfahání pioneering to the city in 1955 and residing in it until 1964,[1] and a Local Spiritual Assembly had been formed by 1962 as the first in the country.[2]

Rúhíyyih Khánum visited Abidjan for three weeks in late 1970, briefly in early 1971, and again in April 1971 to attend the establishment of the National Spiritual Assembly of Ivory Coast, Mali, and Upper Volta during her extended teaching tour of Africa.[3][4][5] In 1973 Dr. Aziz Navidi represented the Bahá’í Faith at a Conference on World Peace Through Law held in Abidjan,[6] and an International Youth Conference sponsored by the National Assembly of Ivory Coast, Mali, and Upper Volta was held in Abidjan in 1976.[7] Collis Featherstone visited the city in January 1978.[8]

In 1983 Counselor Kassimi Fofana participated in a United Nations Day conference,[9] and in 1987 Counselor Zekrollah Kazemi spoke at an African Roundtable on Religious Freedom held by the World Council of Religious Freedom in Abidjan.[10]

In January 2009 Abidjan was the site of one of the 41 regional conferences of the Five Year Plan which was attended by 1,200 people.[11]
