Biography[edit]

Yazdi was born in Alexandria, Egypt into a prominent Bahá’í family,[1][2] with his father being Hájí Muhammad Yazdi.[3] His family pioneered to Egypt having settled in Ramleh as of 1910 where Yazdi attended the French Brothers School.[4]

In 1910 ‘Abdu’l-Bahá settled in Ramleh for some time and Yazdi was able to meet Him, and shortly after His arrival Shoghi Effendi visited Ramleh and he and Yazdi became friends. After finishing school he enrolled in the Syrian Protestant College, which became the American University, in Beirut studying alongside Shoghi Effendi and living at the College in a room across a hallway from him. In 1917 he visited the Holy Land with Shoghi Effendi during university holidays.[4] He graduated in 1918 and moved to Damascus.[5] In 1919 he visited the Holy Land from Damascus and departed the Holy Land for Egypt where he boarded a ship to Europe in order to continue his studies in Switzerland and Germany.[5]

In 1920 Yazdi visited England and stayed with Shoghi Effendi in Oxford for a few days while traveling to the United States where he settled in Berkeley, California.[6] He studied at the University of California and also attended a Bahá’í youth group facilitated by Kathryn Frankland where he met Marion Carpenter and they married in 1926.[7][3]

As of 1933 Yazdi was serving as Chairman of the Local Spiritual Assembly of Berkeley,[8] and also served the Faith at the national level as a member of the national Sales Committee for the National Spiritual Assembly as of 1932.[9] In 1938 he taught at the Geyserville Summer School,[10] and as of 1940 he was a member of the Geyserville Committee.[11]

Yazdi was serving as the Chairman of the Northern California State Convention Committee as of 1944,[12] and the Editorial Committee for Bahá’í World as of 1949.[13] The National Spiritual Assembly of the United States established the Asia Teaching Committee at the opening of the Ten Year Crusade in 1953 to focus on establishing the Faith on the continent and Yazdi and his wife were both appointed to it.[14] He later served on the National Teaching Committee and the United Nations Special Committee.[15]

In later life Yazdi continued to give lectures and write articles on the Faith. He celebrated his golden wedding anniversary with Marion in 1976 and passed away in Berkeley in 1978.[16]
