West Hartford is a city in the U.S. State of Connecticut. It is located in Hartford County five miles west of Hartford.
A Bahá’í community was first established in West Hartford in the 1930s. A community was more firmly established in the late 1970s.
History[edit]
Howard Colby Ives, Mabel Ives, and Ides O. Johnson taught the Faith in West Hartford at the beginning of the 1930's and in 1931 an organized Bahá’í Group was established which met once a week to study the Faith.[1] There were still some Bahá’ís in the city by the early 1960's but a community had not been firmly established.[2]
As of 1973 there was an organized Bahá’í Group in West Hartford which collaborated with the Local Spiritual Assembly of Hartford to sponsor a musical presentation by Bahá’í youth to commemorate World Religion Day.[3] In 1976 the National Teaching Committee made establishing a Local Spiritual Assembly in West Hartford by 1977 a goal of the American Bahá’í community.[4]
The Local Spiritual Assembly of West Hartford was established at some point between 1977 and 1980 and in 1980 the body adopted the teaching goal of establishing a Bahá’í Group in Simsbury.[5] The Assembly lapsed in the early 1980's but was re-established in 1984,[6] and the Connecticut Proclamation Conference was held in the city in 1985 which was chaired by Robert Stockman and gathered sixty-five Bahá’ís who consulted on methods of proclaiming the Faith.[7] In 1986 a West Hartford Teaching Project was launched.[8]
In 2024 the West Hartford Bahá’ís collaborated with the Connecticut Council for Interreligious Understanding to hold a celebration of World Religion Day at the Congregation Beth Israel.[9]
