Born and raised[edit]
Father Bronson Rumsey who was a leather dealer who owned $44k in real estate and had a fortune of $55k, a position of high wealth, though not the richest person in their neighborhood. There were five household staff, all born in Europe, in addition to the family of of 8 including parents. Mary was the oldest daughter. Older brother Lawrence was 2 yrs older - in 1863 he would have been 15 yrs old.[1]
In 1865 the NY Census had the Rumseys had a brick home worth $40k. Several of the servants lived on the estate with their own families. Mary’s mother Eveline was born in Michigan. The family did not have any colored servants or slaves.[2]
By 1870 Mary was the eldest child living at home. There were now 6 servants.[3]
Brother Lawrence was living back at home by 1875[4]

Couple married September 1877.[5]
Married by 1880 to Edward H. Movius and they had a daughter Evalyne, 2 yrs old. Edward was a lawyer. They lived in Delaware Ave in Buffalo and had three servants, all born in Ireland.[6]

Edward, born in Michigan was boarding at a home in Cincinnati Ohio.[12]

Son Hallam was a Harvard graduate Class of 1902. He had gone on to study landscape architecture at Cambridge and joined the office of E. Burnett in NY, then A. A. Shurtleff in Boston and since 1906 independently with offices in NY and Boston and generally part of Boston society. Hallam was born Sep 22, 1880. He had attended Nichols School in Buffalo and HIll School of Pottstown, PA. He graduated with an AB in 1902, married Alice West Dec 11, 1906 and had two children in 1907 and 1909.[14]

Mary was a ‘friend’ of the Albright Art Gallery of Buffalo, later the Albright-Knox Art Gallery.[17]
In 1910 Mary was divorced and living in Manhattan, NY, at 121 Madison Ave but alone - no servants though some neighbors in the apartment building did.[18]
Mary was a music student of Mrs. J. R. McArthur.[19]
Husband? Brother? was traveling 1910/1914 (but born in Ypsilanti)[20]
A Mrs. Movius was present for Abdu’l-Bahá’s stay in London. This might have been Mary, her daughter Evelyn, or another person entirely.[21]
Mary was listed as a widow, born March 1851, arrived on the SS Amerika from Cherbourg in October 1912 - as did her daughter Evelyn Movius Hall.[22] With this early connection, they well have known of John Harrison Mills, painter, writer, and founding Bahá'í of the Buffalo community.
Mary listed as a patroness of a suffrage meeting in Buffalo.[23]
Mary updated the Harvard Class of 1872 report for her brother. She reports he had been sick some years and mostly staying at home. He's VP of the Bank of Buffalor, director of the Erie County Savings Bank and Market Bank as well as a working farm. He had had two sons both serving in WWI.[24]
Listed as a widow in the Buffalo newspapers.[25]

Hallam also worked in dairy and apple farming, trips to Europe in 1902, 1906, and 1921. He enlisted for WWI in Aug 25, 1917 and served as a Captain of FA, assigned to the 349th at Camp Dix and with the AEF in France from June 1918 to March 1919 as part of the Marbache Sector and other efforts.[29]

Baha’i News covered Baha'is Florence Morton, Mary Runsay Movius and Horace Holley were a commmittee aiding in holding the World Unity Conferences associated with the World Unity Federation run by… Conferences had been developed for Green Acre, Philadelphia, Cleveland, and Chicago.[36]
Mary was a member of the board of the World Unity Foundation, listed as living in New York city.[37]
The committee was defined to operate in association with the World Unity Conferences rather than as a responsabiiity of the committee and thus of the NSA. The World Unity Foundation was established Jan 1928 in New York state. Trustees of the charter were John Herman Randall, Mary Rumsey Movius, Melbert B. Cary, Florence Reed Morton, Alfred W. Martin, Horace Holly and Mountfort Mills.[38]

A marble bust of Abdu’l-Baha was commissioned by Mary for the Baha’is done by Anna Coleman Ladd of Boston. [40]
Mary was president of the World Unity Publishing Corporation[42] which service she continued into 1933.[43] after which she was still known as a contributor.[44]
Foundation ended/involvement[45]
First in 1930 land assessments were carried out of her land in Niagara.[46] These were soon followed by more evaluations in 1936.[47]
Mary was chair of the Buffalo assembly.[48] Mary was also the delegate from the Buffalo community to the national convention back in Spring 1934.[49]
Book and retirement[edit]
'Life Eternal' was noted coming out mid-December 1936.[50] alternative title 'Life of the Soul’[51] Additional printings arranged for November 1937.[52]
Following the earlier assessments of 1930/1936, there was one in 1937 land assessment in Niagara,[53] and these occurred again across 1945-8.[54]
Taxes on the Movius estate and the trust for daughter Evelyn for 1945 were under review for a decision in 1954. Additionally it was noted father Bronson Rumse died March 1902 in Buffalo and he left part of his estate for a trust for Mary as well as other parts of others. Sister Evelyn Rumsey Cary died 1924 and her part of the inheritance was passed to Mary's daughter Evelyn Rumsey Lord. The trusts for the sons was closed before 1945 leaving only Mary's and Mary's daughter functioning. Howeve income from the remaining tracks of land would not cover the taxes needed by 1942. They decided to forgo income from the trusts in order to pay off taxes and were seeking to have those tax payments recognized and not counted as income upon which taxes would be do.[55]
Died[edit]
Mary Lovering Rumsey Movius died Sep 5, 1948 of old age after some 8 months visiting Pasadena, CA, and cremated for the Mountain View Mausoleum Crematory. Born Mar 29, 1850, in Buffalo, NY to Bronson Case Rumsey (born in Connecticut) and Eveline Hall. Later married Edward Hallam Movius. She had been living at 255 Nottingham Terrace, Buffalo, NY.[56]
