Born and raised[edit]

Kathryn Potter was born about 1909 in Buffalo, New York, to Joseph and Flora Potter, the youngest of four daughters (one having moved out years before.)[1] Both parents were born in New York and the family lived in Buffalo into the 1920s probably. One of the parents has a Swiss-German father but which one isn't clear.

The family moved to Hamburg, New York, on Clark St, by 1920. Kathryn Potter had earned a Geography honor roll status at Jr high in Hamburg.[2] and raised more of her grades to honor roll the next year.[3] She was on Honor Roll in Intermediate Geometry in 1924.[4] By 1925 was honor roll in German and Plane Geometry.[5] She graduated 1926.[6]

Careers[edit]

Potter was a physical ed instructor in 1929 and making a winter trip home to visit.[7] She was also back in Hamburg for a sister marriage.[8] In 1930 she was listed….[9] Joseph was a market gardener and upgraded to a full farm by 1935-1940. While at least some of her sisters went to be teachers, Kathryn was list as a farmer at age 31.

Baha'i[edit]

Hamburg[edit]

Potter was member of the first Hamburg Spiritual Assembly in 1950.[10] She hosted meetings in her home in July 1951.[11] In 1952 Potter among society fundraiser for polio sufferers.[12] and was amid community fundraising.[13] Potter was secretary of the Hamburg Township Assembly for 1953-4,[14] attend dedication of Baha'i Temple,[15] and was among Proclamation Day meetings walks in a series,[16] and also gave another in Rochester,[17] and attended the Western New York convention.[18] The newspaper coverage reported that 75 attend and voted in person, 72 voted absentee, and attended included:[19] Terah Cowart-Smith, Mary Wilkins, Edith McLaren, P. Robert Meinhard, Alfred B. Reed, Mehdi Firoozi, Joseph Noyes, Katheryn Potter, Herbert Hern pioneers were Alice Hawthorn, Lillian Middlemast, Esther Evans, Chirstine McKay, Elton and Mrs. Smith, Margaret Mills, John Leonard, which they attended next April.[20]

In 1954 Baha'is observed the Declaration of the Bab in Hamburg with talks by Potter, Pringle, McCloskey at McCloskey home.[21]

Greensboro[edit]

Potter had moved to Greensboro, North Carolina, by December, 1954.[22]

She was a co-lead of most of the semi-weekly public meetings at the Baha'i Center which at the time was 617 W. Market St.[citation needed] The summer of 1956 she returned north to attend Louhelen, and vacation with parents in Hamburg.[23]

Her mother Flora Potter died the winter of 1957.[24] But January 1958 the Baha'is of Greensboro held World Religion Day at A&T College and Potter was one of the speakers.[25] That April the spiritual assembly incorporated with news that Potter and others were attending International Conference in Chicago.[26] In June Potter was recieved at a reception back in Hamburg.[27] That November Potter was one of the speakers at the observance of the Birth of Baha'u'llah.[28]

In 1959 Potter gave the talk when the community observed Proclamation Day.[29] Potter hosted the community observance of the Birth of Baha’u'llah at her home at 124 Oak Ct.[30] In 1959 Potter owned the home at 124 Oak Ct. She was listed in the phonebook as bookkeeper for the Strand, Skee, Jones & Co., accountants.[31]

From February 1960 through October her home functioned as the Bahá'í Center hosting semi-weekly talks initiated by John A. Goodwin,[33] started around the time he was diagnosed with a fatal disease which would end his life in 1969. He had been a member of the first assembly of Greensboro in 1943 having joined the religion early in 1942. After he was unable to sustain meetings F. Kimball Kinney, WFMY producer and editor, took up the service and would continued into the summer of 1962.[34] The meetings continued even through Potter was likely away early December 1960 when her father died.[35] Across this early 1960s Potter was the secretary of the Southeastern Bahá'í School Committee.[36] and chair 1963-4.[37]

Durham, NC[edit]

The Durham (city) Assembly was elected April 20, 1962, with members including Potter.[38] Amidst these Potter also visited Hamburg in 1962.[39]

Potter was chair of the assembly when Terah Cowart-Smith gave the talk for the for the World Religion Day program in Durham January 1964.[40]

Binghamton[edit]

She married Paul H. Dailey and moved to Hamburg, NY, in April 1964.[41]

In July 1969 Kathryn was an assembly member in Binghamton, New York.[42]

Kathyrn died July 6, 1989, in Binghamton.[43]
