Megan Lewis[edit]

Name: 112: Megan Lewis Date: 8/18/2007[20] … 15. When you're not in school, what do you like to do? I LOVE to cook- especially to try new recipes. I also camp, hike, and canoe frequently, and these hobbies also involve photography. Participating in the Baha’i community is very important to me and family time is cherished. Some other pastimes include sewing, crocheting, painting, and bloging, though not in the recent past. . … 18. Are there any skills, abilities, or knowledge that you have that you would like to help your peers in the program learn? If yes, what are they? From the e-introductions, it seems that I am fairly inexperienced as far as my knowledge, skills, and abilities in and of education are concerned. I do have special knowledge of biology and the Baha’i view of education, children, and youth- which in some cases might be worth sharing. I expect that I will find a useful place among my peers but am not sure what it will be yet.

2009[edit]

Teacher candidates - Rallos[edit]

Student: Rallos…

  • Participation

Response: Met Evidence/Comments: This is particularly evident in the letters of recommendation from both the spiritual assembly of the Baha’is of Tacoma and from Dr. Amy Weinmann. In the first, it is mentioned that through individual initiative I have been volunteering my time to work with the children and youth in our community. In Dr. Weinmann’s letter she states that I have been “invaluable in moving the project forward” which is also highly indicative of participation. …

  • Assessment of Indicator 3: The teacher candidate demonstrates a commitment to teaching all people's children by:

seeking and considering multiple perspectives about people's values, cultures, ethnicities, learning needs, and about the cultural, political, and historical contexts of teaching, learning, and schooling; Response: Not Yet Met Evidence/Comments: I believe I am on the right path with this one, in that I have worked with children from multiple backgrounds as mentioned by the reference letter from the Bahais, but this is an incredibly complex and vast area of knowledge and I certainly have much to learn.

  • reflecting on her/his knowledge, beliefs, attitudes, and practices

Response: Not Yet Met Evidence/Comments: Reflection is a common Bahai practice. In addition I have kept a blog in the past, which unfortunately I have not had much time for recently, but I find that sort of reflection very enjoyable, and therapeutic. I'm not sure if this is substantial enough evidence, and it wasnt in my application materials so I check not met, though I feel I have or at least am highly primed for it.

  • analyzing the effects of her/his speech and action

Response: Met Evidence/Comments: The letters of recommendation from both the Baha’is and Dr. Weinmann mention that I am conscientious, both in dealing with others and in my work. …

  • Assessment of Indicator 4: The teacher candidate demonstrates meaningful purposes for creating effective learning interactions with children and youth by:

actively seeking knowledge and ideas about theories and practices Response: Met Evidence/Comments: As mentioned on my resume and recommendation letter- I have done this in the Baha'i community by taking special training to learn more about teaching children’s classes, being a jr. youth animator, and also to teach Ruhi courses (I have completed this more recently) which are a series of classes about fundamental spiritual principals and are open to anyone. As a less formal example, I picked up You Can’t Say You Can’t Play as recommended in one of the MIT e-introductions. It was a fun read and was nice to see how conscientious teachers can be.

  • consistently seeking to apply and test her/his knowledge in order to positively impact student learning.

Response: Met Evidence/Comments: I am always reflecting on the children’s classes and jr. youth classes I have led. Since my background in teaching is minimal I tend to experiment with the format of the classes and with the projects I bring to them in order to try to facilitate learning. The letter from the Spiritual Assembly of the Baha’is mentions my capacity to bring [21]

Chai Baha'i[edit]

At Rainbow Gatherings, many different religions and belief systems are represented. Some people form camps based around certain religions.… There is a Baha’i camp and often the “Chai Baha’i” stand which serves free chai tea to anyone who comes with an empty cup in hand. Anyone is welcome to come pray, sing, and eat (for free) at any camp and talk and learn about each other’s beliefs.[22]
