The Desire of the World

The materials gathered here are primarily for contemplation and meditation,’ the author writes of this personal selection from the Writings of Bahá’u’lláh to which she has devoted much time during recent years. ‘Read this as a book, unabashed,’ she advises. ‘Or take up the different subjects and reflect upon them. Or take up each separate quotation like a jeweller who contemplates . . . a surpassing gem . . . But above all come back again and again to drink from the living waters of the Word of God.’
Many themes are included in this rich collection. The first part considers the shaping of character. Then comes the great teachings of the Faith: the Godhead, the Manifestation of God, the role of religion in the world, the supreme importance of this Day. These are followed by the author’s reflections on prayer and meditation, with her own inspiring choices from Bahá’u’lláh’s words. In its final section the book attains an uplifting climax with a listing of the ‘extraordinary wealth of terms which are the titles of God and of the Manifestation of God’.
All who discover this treasure-trove will be grateful to the one who conceived it and, in her busy life, brought it as a gift to us.
