The Bahá’í Faith in the Stevens Point area

From Bahaipedia
Jump to:navigation, search

The Bahá'í Faith in the area of Stevens Point, Wisconsin, as reported in newspapers. The town had a regional population of about 70,000 people in 2010. One newspaper is the Daily Journal, currently at online, and another is the UWSP newspaper, the Pointer, currently online here. The archived material of the Journal has mentions of the Faith going back some years at least to 1932 but mention of Bábí period history occurs as well. Archives of the Pointer go back to December 1895 through 2016, though some editions are not digitized.[1]

‘Abdu’l-Bahá's train trip from Chicago to Minneapolis might have come near the town. After a period of presences of the Faith in areas north and west of early Bahá'í communities mentions of the Faith drew close to, and then in, Stevens Point. Explicit mentions close to Stevens Point begin perhaps in 1961 when Charles Walcott appeared in Marshfield some 35 miles away. After a brief mention of Bahá'ís living in Stevens Point in 1965, there is a sustained level of presence in the newspapers begins in the 1970s and continues through to the present. Mostly this is in the form of regular notices of meetings (until the Journal stopped publishing calendars of events) but there are many other events, more so in the 1970s and 80s, though there are a series of contributed articles in the early 2000s, coming to the present day with mostly cooperative mentions of the Bahá'ís supporting community focuses like Martin Luther King Day and addressing global warming.

Pre 1970s[edit]

Bábí era[edit]

  • In 1869 a newspaper over in Green Bay echoed an article from Leo de Colange's 1869 Zell's Popular Encyclopedia.[2]
  • In July 1903 an brief mention is made of Bábís killed in Yezd, Iran.[3] The terminology was a misnomer but common at the time. It would be a few years before "Baha'i" would be come the more common term.

Abdu'l-Baha's passage from Chicago to Minneapolis[edit]

  • In 1912 'Abdu'l-Bahá road a train from Chicago to Minneapolis. Per Allan Ward's 239 Days page 145 the entourage traveled most of Tuesday, September 17. According to Mahmud's Diary the train left Chicago at 10:00 a.m, made a (at least one) stop in-between, and then, "At 9:00 in the evening, when the train was but a few stations away from Minneapolis, we were joined by Mr [Albert Heath] Hall and some friends."(Maumud's Diary, p. 270-1) Bill Sears recalled a boyhood possible sighting of Abdu'l-Baha Sept 20 when He was leaving for Kansas.[4]

Possibilities for the run from Chicago to Minneapolis for ‘Abdu’l-Bahá and His entourage include:

  • Chicago and North Western Transportation Company. The 1935 version of the route originated at the Chicago and North Western Terminal (now the Ogilvie Transportation Center) on Madison Street in Chicago. It ran to Milwaukee on the lakefront commuter line and stopped at the Lakefront station on Wisconsin Avenue. It ran to Wyeville, Wisconsin about 60 miles southwest of Stevens Point, where it followed the Omaha Road route to St. Paul. In the period of the trip it was controlled by Chicago and North Western Railway. It stopped at the Saint Paul Union Depot, and then made the short run to the Minneapolis Great Northern Depot over the Stone Arch Bridge. Maps of 1902 routes are similar.[5]
  • Chicago Great Western Railway though it was not a major router for passengers. This route runs along the length of the border with Wisconsin and enters Iowa, and then turns north.

Regardless which route taken they would have probably arrived at the Minneapolis Great Northern Depot which originally was across the street and named the "Minneapolis Union Depot", but that side is now used by the US Post Office. A nearby bridge was built for the railroad in 1883.[6]

Coming closer to Stevens Point[edit]

Though the Faith dates communities along Lake Michigan, before 1900 and after, moving west and north took some time. Albert Vail was noted in 1925 making a trip to Madison in the Baha'i News,[7] and an assembly was raised there in 1939.[8] The Journal carried an UP story of a Bahá'í wedding in Milwaukee.[9] Ruth Moffett and Margaret Reimer (later Sears) were noted "offering their services to an isolated believer in Green Bay" in the summer of 1936.[10] The series returned in the Fall,[11] and Winter.[12] Classes were held in homes in Green bay in 1940.[13] William Sears, in the years before he was appointed a Hand of the Cause, made a speaking stop at Oshkosh in 1944-5.[14] In 1947 the Baha'i News mentioned a copy of Baha'u'llah and the New Era was donated to a library in Stevens Point.[15] Esther Wallner married non-Bahá'í Ernest Solterman in 1951 in Sheboygan.[16] Goal cities in Wisconsin for the Ten Year Crusade included Fond du Lac, Green Bay, Oshkosh, and Sheboygan.[17] But the Niss family out of Milwaukee made news even in Stevens Point by moving to Montana.[18] In April 1956 Florence Mayberry made a trip to Oshkosh.[19] Charles Walcott gave a talk at Marshfield in 1961.[20] Fond du Lac elected an assembly in 1962,[21] and there is one mentioned for Green Bay as well.[22]

First[edit]

1965 was a big year. We have the first evidence of Bahá'ís living in Stevens Point. Bahá'ís from Stevens Point are reported attending a Naw Ruz celebration in Appleton.[23] Florence Mayberry made a return trip to Appleton and back to Oshkosh in April 1965 though Bahá'ís from Stevens Point are not mentioned.[24] In May the Journal published an AP retrospective mention of the events in 1955 when the Bahá'ís were illegalized in Iran.[25] That same year Bahá'í youth were noted in Appleton visiting a Bahá'í exhibit in Oshkosh.[26] Bahá'ís over in Fond du Lac held a Birth of the Báb observance in October.[27]

1970s[edit]

At first sporadically and then more consistently either both the UWSP Pointer or the town Journal begin to mention Bahá'í events. It all begins with Cathy Ann Symonds and Dennis John Mills getting married in a local ceremony at the Duda home in September 1970, with witnesses Sandra Stewart and Grace Shahrokh.[28] The Mills family is from Rice Lake, far to the northwest of Stevens Point. In November the Holiday Inn hosted the state Bahá'í convention to elect seven delegates to the national convention.[29] Contact information for the Faith advertised in the Journal pointed to Rhinelander.[30] After the convention, a "Baha'i committee" (regional teaching committee??) was set to meet on UWSP campus.[31]

After that flurry of activity in the Fall of 1970, there is a break in mention until the Fall of 1972, (there is a travel advert noting Bahá'ís in Haifa in July.[32]) From then on there is at least annual mention of the Faith except 1980 and 2009, and usually every few months. In October 1972 a series of talks was advertised in the Journal - names mentioned include Ed and Margaret Clyton, Ian Bamber, with assistance of Mrs. Jack Reynolds and Trudy Erwin.[33] Thomas Rowe had joined the UWSP faculty in 1972.[34] Bahá'ís held World Religion Day in January 1973, advertised in the Journal, on UWSP campus, with students Gordon Schultz and Charlotte Reynolds.[35]In February the group expected to host a conference. In the meantime a "Baha'i Association of Unity" was also listed in the UWSP catalog as a religious group that year.[36] That Winter meeting did take place - Dennis Bahr of the Southern Wisconsin District Teaching Committee, sent a Letter to Editor from Madison about how pleased the Bahá'ís were.[37] That closed out the academic year's mention of the Faith.

That Fall, in September, a regular Bahá'í fireside was advertised in the Journal meeting on 5th Avenue Saturdays and contact of Mr or Mrs. Jack Reynolds.[38] Meetings continued to be advertised at their residence.[39] Summer 1974 advertising in the Journal continued of such meetings.[40] That summer is also the first mention of the first mention of the Faith in the UWSP Pointer as a profile of the religion in general, though there is no mention of a local community[41]

Meetings in town continued to be advertised in the Journal in January 1975.[42] In February there is mention of a Bahá'í meeting on Warner Street south of campus.[43] Notices of these meetings continued occasionally.[44] In May a slides of a pilgrimage to holy land Shrines was shown.[45] In June the Journal printed an AP story profiling the Faith, ending the academic year.[46]

In October a Bahá'í Club on campus is noted having invited Virginia Fries to observe UN Day "to speak on the role of women in a changing society." [47] Public meetings were noted off campus as well, listing the contacts as Mr. and Mrs. Christian.[48] Point Bahá'ís advertised holding the Birth of the Bab with a slide presentation by Steven Christianson on their pilgrimage, and a few days later a UN Day observance with a talk by Virginia Fries was set.[49] Then they advertised the observance of the Day of the Covenant and the 75th anniversary of His Ascension, though contact information is given.[50] In December the campus club advertised in the Journal that the film "A New Wind" would be played on campus.[51] Mr. and Mrs. Steven Christianson gave their slide presentation of their pilgrimage over in Wisconsin Rapids in February, 1976.[52] That March Bahá'ís from Stevens Point and Wausau gathered at UWSP campus to watch the TV program "After the Fact" on cable TV, as advertised in the Journal.[53] The next mention of the Faith is April 1977.[54] In June there is a Journal advert for a tv show "The New World" on cable tv, finishing it out the academic year.[55] Though locally there is some gap in coverage a couple incidents elsewhere are echoed locally. In August the Journal covered a hostage situation at the Bosch Bahá'í School,[56] and that Idi Amin had illegalized Bahá'ís and others in September.[57] But advertised local firesides in the Journal continued.[58] A break in coverage occurs until advertisements occur of L. B. Johnson giving talks at meeting.[59]

Bahá'ís held district convention in Rhinelander in October 1978; Sue and Steve Christiansen, Tom and Mary Rowe, Valerie Foley (née Hess, later Konopacky) were going to attend.[60] Bahá'ís advertised they held an observance of the Birth of the Bab.[61] In May 1979 Lori Block was advertised giving a talk and slides about her travels to Alaska.[62] The summer videos were sponsored by the community on cable tv.[63] Journal echoed an AP story of the Bahá'ís in Iran in trouble; comments of Mary Hardy.[64] In November The Pointer picks up mention of the Faith again with a profile of the religion and noting faculty member Tom Rowe and five students active on campus.[65] The article mentions the Stevens Point area community is at seven.

From 1972 through 1979 there was continuous coverage at some level in whichever newspaper. However in 1980 there is no mention yet known.

1980s[edit]

Just like a decade ago, the next series begins with a wedding. In early April 1981 there was a Bahá'í wedding of Valerie Foley and William R. Konopacky.[66] A few weeks later a Bahá'í presentation on "Universal Peace" was held on campus.[67] In May Bahá'ís were pictured in the Journal for Rose tree planting at the Portage County Home.[68] Charles Gongbobga Forkwa was noted as president of the Baha'i Club in the campus yearbook Horizon.[69] That summer Bahá'ís of Stevens Point shared national news story of the UN being appealed to over persecution in Iran.[70] James and Bobbie Stokes joined the UWSP faculty/staff in 1981.[71]

In January, 1982 a letter to editor by Valerie Konopacky draws further attention to the persecution in Iran.[72] In March Tom Rowe writes a similar letter to the Journal as noted as Chair or the community (assembly or group.)[73] The prayer meeting is mentioned separately in another article with comments of Valerie Konopacky.[74] In April The Pointer notes the Bahá'ís as among the alternatives for religions on campus.[75] The journalist interviewed Tom Rowe who was careful to say that he cannot provide an interpretation of the religion as one might a minister and was also referred to a NY Times article unnamed but referring to the persecution in Iran and encouraging letters to members of Congress to address such grievances. Meanwhile in the Journal Lori Block shows slides of trip to Panama.[76] That Summer an AP story echoed in the Journal notes a degree of controversy over new UPI owners and their protests of the Vietnam war.[77] That Winter the Unitarian Universalists host a meeting for Jim and Bobby (Bobbie) Stokes offering a talk on the Faith.[78]

Bahá'ís met, and talked about persecution in Iran, in March 1983.[79] The 1983-84 "GuidePoint", a book for student leaders on campus, (student government? dorm leaders?) mentioned the Baha'i Club.[80] All along firesides are held at one location,[81] or another.[82] In May Bahá'ís are noted donating to the Crisis Center.[83] That Summer the Bahá'ís held a memorial for persecuted Bahá'ís in Iran; Tom Rowe was noted as secretary of the community.[84]

In February Art Simmons for Interfaith Council writes letter to editor of the Journal about Iranian persecution of Bahá'ís.[85] In March Tom Rowe writes a letter to the editor of the Journal on this continued persecution,[86] and was noted as the advisor for the Baha'i Club on campus.[87]

In August a Bahá'í wedding of Cassandra Hess and Stanley Domka was held.[88] The same month Patricia Herriott gave a talk about her Peace Corps service in Peru, Nicaragua, and Guatemala.[89] In September the Club and religion are summarized in a general review of religions on campus with Tom Rowe being the contact person.[90] Bobbie Stokes joined the UWSP faculty in 1984.[91] Bahá'ís were also noted members of the Interfaith Council.[92] The following January the Bahá'í hosted a World Religion Day observance published in the Journal letter to the editor and other articles.[93] Firesides continued.[94] In the Fall the Bahá'ís held a mayorally proclaimed UN Peace Day.[95] The effort was followed up by a profile of the religion and it's orientation towards peace.[96] The articles say there is an Assembly in Point. January 1986 the Bahá'ís held an MLK Jr celebration with a race unity event.[97] In February Appleton's Harvey Weisberg presented a talk on peace movements in town.[98] In March Elizabeth Jenner from Eau Claire gave a talk on peace in town.[99] The obituary of Bahá'í Gilbert DeBruin from Almond was published mid-March.[100] In April Ted Heiser from Eau Claire gave a talk on pace at meeting on Prais St. [101] Then there was a story of the Spiritual Assembly of the city holding an essay contest.[102]

November 1986 a brief notice in the Journal mentioned Tom Rowe was treasurer of the Baha'i Club on campus.[103] Later that month Indian Bahá'ís Nick and Charlotte Hockings presented a video on Indian prophecies on campus - they were from Lac du Flambeau Reservation with a tape of Lee Brown from a Bahá'í meeting of Indians July 1985 in Fairbanks, Alaska.[104] The video was eventually presented on youtube.[105] The Hockings were both members of the Native American Teaching Task Force, and Charlotte was on the district teaching committee. All along there have been regular firesides.[106] In May 1987 a quote from the Hidden Words was published in the Journal.[107] That was the beginning of a almost daily series of such mentions across most of May (save for the week of the Declaration of the Bab.)[108] Quotes continued systematically through June interlaced with notices of firesides and July until the first week of August - possibly the entire series of the Hidden Words was published.[109] The Lotus Temple of India was talked about with slides by Green Bay resident Meg Fischbach.[110] Meg's husband was a member of the University of Wisconsin at Green Bay's physics department. Bahá'ís Tim and Lisa Urbonya talk of living in China in October.[111] The Journal advertised the officers of Baha'i Club - Naomi Lancour and Linda Akin.[112]

Baha'i club and community present "The Global brain" at Prentice Street; comments of Ken Rahn in January, 1988.[113] It was also advertised by the Club on campus in the Pointer.[114] The presentation is reviewed and the writer, noting that though the video presented was not directly related to the Faith, it was still something "this sort of presentation should be viewed by all students and faculty" and encouraging a "think globally" approach - "Let us no more be true to boasted race or clan, but to our highest dream, the brotherhood of man."[115]Around this time firesides were advertised only with phone numbers to call for information.[116] In August the Bahá'ís advertised a series of study classes on Prentice St by Tom Rowe.[117] A week later a TV show was aired locally.[118] Regular meetings were still advertised.[119] In January 1989 the Bahá'ís started a Bible study series with James Stokes, Ron Laswell, Tom Rowe, Ken Rahn,[120] around regularly advertised meetings.[121] A Bahá'í study class on children by Judy Morgan-Weisberg was advertised in the Journal at the Prentice address in June.[122] Tim and Lisa Urbonya returned to the area in September and offered a meeting to discuss their year in China.[123]

1990s[edit]

In January 1990 Tom Rowe wrote a letter to editor for the MLK event as secretary of the community.[124] In May Mary Rowe was noted in knitting circles - magazine and book, guilds.[125] The obituary of Bahȧ'í Amelia Jacobsen was published in February 1991.[126] Tom Rowe wrote a letter to the editor on some ideas on government sometimes citing Baha'i values.[127] Mary Rowe was profiled in the Journal again in October.[128] Regular weekly meetings continued to be advertised.

In November 1992 an AP story of the Bahá'í World Congress was echoed in the Journal.[129] Weekly meetings continued. Meetings would be the only advertised presence of the Faith all through 1993 though 1995. In October 1995 Tom Rowe was noted on the front page of The Pointer, and in the Journal, contributing to a program on "Alcohol Awareness Week" and being sponsored by the Baha'i Club.[130] Regular meetings were published in the Journal all through the period into 1996. In 1997 there was a spot of controversy when a local pastor reacted to handouts distributed in schools which quoted the Golden Rule including a Bahá'í quote among many, as well as general timeline info on religions.[131] There is no mention of this issue the rest of 1997. A January an 1998 AP story of an ex-nun-turned-Bahá'í in Michigan was published in the Journal.[132] In May Tom Rowe wrote as an individual about a series of letters to the editor on the existence/non-existence of God.[133] He spoke in favor of the existence of God but favored the tone of the atheist oriented letter to the editor previously published. A December advertisement by a local travel agency highlighted the Bahá'í House of Worship in one of its packages.[134] Regular meetings continued to be advertised through 1999. In March 1999, UWSP faculty member Jim Maas wrote a letter to the editor of the Pointer responding to an article about whether religion was important to individuals on campus. Maas noted that on a "wellness campus" "spiritual wellness is a component of a healthy lifestyle."[135] Maas noted that the Journal listed local opportunities including the Bahá'í Faith among a few examples. That summer the Twin Cities Bahá'í Youth Workshop performed in Point.[136]

2000s[edit]

April 2000 opens with Tom Rowe writing a letter to the editor as an individual rather than for the Faith on the matter of gun control.[137] But in July a Journal article about freedom against the grain of normal society profiled Bahá'ís Ken and Terry Rahn, then of Rudolph, noting the challenges of persecutions in Iran and rarity of various local presence of the Bahá'ís.[138] The article also notes a local exotic dancer. Indeed Tom Rowe then wrote a letter to the editor complaining of the mixed topics, complaining that the reader could conclude that the religion endorsed exotic dance clubs.[139] Meanwhile the Rahns ran a pet cemetery and Ken worked on landscaping and ecological studies in Costa Rica.[140]

In July 2001 Bahá'í Mary Bratz began to contribute to a regular series of articles "From the Pulpit". This first was article on the appreciation of diversity to the Journal.[141] Later in November Valerie Fox sent a letter to the editor on support for spiritual leadership.[142] Mary Bratz returned with an article on world peace in March 2002.[143] In February 2002 the regularly advertised contact information on Bahá'ís was switched to being in the county.[144] In 2002-3 Bobbie Stodes was director of the Tutoring-Learning Center and was presented a paper on the work of the institution.[145] In 2002 a piece in the Journal commented briefly on the name of Benjamin Quddus Philippe, of MTV.[146] Tom Rowe commented on voting for the politician with the fewest signs.[147] In 2003 Mary Bratz contributed another article to the Journal.[148] The article reviewed how media drives fears, the priority given to stories about terrorism and safety amidst loss and the promise of a bright future. She returned in an article in May.[149] It reviewed the imbalance and balancing of the role of women in society and religion, beliefs of Bahá'ís. Though the usual regular meetings still note Portage County there is occasional mention of Bahá'í contacts in town.[150] A December 2003 letter to the editor about hypocrisy and religious stances and diversity listed a variety of religions and included the Bahá'ís in passing.[151] Bratz contributed another article the Journal published in February 2004.[152] It reviewed the possibilities and capabilities of youth. She follows again in June 2004 with an article of the personal responsibility for spiritual growth.[153] Another in October reviewed the persecution of Bahá'ís in Iran.[154] In January 2005 Tom Rowe had a letter to the editor about smoking (anti-smoking).[155] In July Bratz returned to the topic of adults being responsible for our own growth.[156] In November she reviewed Bahá'ís working with the UN.[157] September 2006 it was about sincere prayer.[158] The March 2007 article reviewed the reflection of life on Earth and the spiritual realm.[159]

The Journal also stopped posting community religious services of all kinds in April 2007. The next listing of events in mid-May is much briefer of all kinds of meetings and Bahá'ís are not listed,[160] and by June no listing of events was found.

In May 2007 the Bahá'í Temple was noted in contention for Seven wonders balloting.[161] Mary Bratz' series returned in October referring to ecological cooperation responsibilities endorsed by Bahá'í teachings.[162] In February 2008 she was speaker for the interfaith meeting "Why caring for the Earth is a spiritual issue".[163] That appears to be the end of the series of articles.

UWSP participated in a "climate" study of diversity on campus among the five UW System institutions in 2007-8. Among the respondents, which included faculty, staff, and students, 2 were noted as Bahá'ís - there was a 18.4% response rate from among the potential pool of responders, (so by pure chance that could mean there were around 10 Bahá'ís on campus.)[164]

From 2010[edit]

In May 2010 Bahá'ís were listed among a interfaith support for advocating with congress on ecological issues.[165] October advertising for this also noted Bahá'ís briefly.[166]

The 2011 MLK event was reviewed and support for nonprofit Justiceworks "a restorative justice community organization" included the Bahá'í Faith community.[167] The 2011 9/11 memorial service included mention of Baháís as well.[168] Reviewing afterwards a pastor noted Bahá'ís among the well received participants.[169] Fahimeh Vahdata was noted contributing to a UWSP review of artists, (and that she had a piece in an exhibit in the Milwaukee Art Museum.)[170] Bobbie Stokes, most recently the director of the Tutoring-Learning Center, retired in 2010-11. She co-founded Issues in Writing, and twice won the Chancellor’s Award,[91] and was a grand marshall of the 2010 UWSP commencement.[171] Thomas Rowe, long a campus Baha'i Club faculty advisor since 1972-3 when he joined the faculty at UWSP, retired in 2011-2.[34] He was also a contributor to campaigns in campus awareness programs about alcohol,[130] gave classes in prisons,[172] and instructor in playing the Bridge card game.[173] The Stokes were noted are on the Issues in Writing editorial board as of 2016-7.[174] The Bahá'í documentary "Education under fire" was shown in November 2012, along with a talk by Saeid Nooshabadi and Laleh Vahdat, on the persecution in Iran.[175] Mary Bratz was listed as the contact person.

James Stokes, who had won faculty awards in 1994, 1999,[176] 1998-9 and 2006-7,[177] and contributed UWSP Community/Campus Lecture Series open to the public in 2008-9,[178] the Wisconsin Institute for Peace and Conflict Studies in 2011-2[179] twice in 2012,[180] was listed as retired faculty from UWSP - and still contributed two talks - in 2015.[181] He also lead a academic summer trip to London many times.[182]

Bahá'ís were noted among the supports of the MLK celebration for 2015.[183] In March Mary Bratz and Dick Stephens contributed a letter to the editor supporting community engagement in addressing climate change and accepting its reality.[184] The Bahá'ís were noted again in 2016 supporting the MLK celebration.[185]
