This template takes as input the name of a country, dependency or place and returns an alphabetic code that refers to it. Most of these codes are defined in the ISO_3166-1 standard; some are loosely based on the standard; others (especially historical countries, empires and kingdoms) are given arbitrary codes for convenience.
