Siyyid Muhammad-Husayn (d. 1930) was a member of the Afnán family and a relative of the Báb. He was the paternal grandfather of Shoghi Effendi.
Background[edit]
Muhammad-Husayn was the son of Hájí Mírzá Abú'l-Qásim and lived in Shiraz. He was introduced to the Bábí religion by Núri'd-Dín.[1] He attended several gatherings with the encouragement of Núri'd-Dín at which he heard the Writings of the Báb but did not take the religion seriously as Núri'd-Dín was his cousin and they were around the same age. He studied the religion more seriously when Hájí Muhammad-Ibrahim-i-Muballigh visited Shiraz in 1867 to teach and became a Bábí through Muballigh's efforts.[2]
In his career he was a merchant based in Shíráz and he married Zívar-Sultán Bagum, also known as Khánum Hájíyyih, who was the daughter of a renowned merchant and they had a son, Mírzá Hádí Shírází, who married a daughter of ‘Abdu’l-Bahá, and a daughter, Rubabih.[1] He had a second wife named 'Ismat Khánum (d. 1951) and they had a son, Siyyid Mihdí, and daughter, Qudsiyyih.[1]
