Shanghai is a port city in eastern China. Located at the mouth of the Yangtze River, it is one of the largest cities in both China and the world, serving as a major centre for international finance and trade. A cousin of the Báb, perhaps the first Bahá’í in China, settled in Shanghai in the 1860s to expand the family business, and more Bahá’ís either visited or settled in the city in the early 20th century.[1] The first Chinese Bahá’í settled in Shanghai during this time, after learning about the Faith in the United States.[2] By the 1930s, the city was home to an active Bahá’í community.[3]
