Súriy-i-Aṣḥáb

The Súriy-i-Aṣḥáb, provisionally translated as Súrih of Companions, is an Arabic Tablet of Bahá’u’lláh revealed in Adrianople.

Subject[edit]

The Tablet proclaims Bahá’u’lláh's station as the Manifestation of God foretold by the Báb and it is among the earliest examples of Bahá’u’lláh doing so on a wide scale, with the initial Declaration of Bahá’u’lláh in the Garden of Riḍván being limited to close companions.[1] It directs His followers to spread His claims throughout the Bábí community,[2] and several prominent Bábís are mentioned by name.[3] In addition to directing Bahá’u’lláh's followers to spread His claims within the Bábí community the Tablet forbids using violence or force to do so.[4]

History[edit]

Stephen Lambden estimates that the Tablet was revealed around 1864 or 1865.[5] It was revealed for Mírzá Áqáy-i-Muníb who is addressed as Habíb in the Tablet.[6] Muníb had accompanied Bahá’u’lláh from Baghdad to Constantinople and was then sent to Persia on His behalf to teach the Bahá’í Faith,[7] and in the Tablet Bahá’u’lláh directed Muníb to only share it with those who were receptive to His claims and to avoid those who were hostile to them.[8] Muníb presented the Tablet to some Bábís in Tehran,[9] and had a copy sent to Kázim-i-Samandar in Qazvín where it was distributed amongst the local Bábí community causing considerable controversy which was resolved with the majority accepting Bahá’u’lláh through discussions and talks.[10]
