Robert Service Brown (September 23, 1891 - July 8, 1962) was an early South Australian Bahá’í, and the inaugural Chairman of the National Spiritual Assembly of Australia and New Zealand.
He was born in Scotland, and emigrated to Australia where he opened a store in Adelaide. His first contact with the Faith came in 1929 when Joe Dobbins invited him to hear Hyde Dunn speak at a Bahá’í meeting. He became a Bahá’í soon after, and he was elected to the Local Spiritual Assembly of Adelaide.[1]
When the first National Convention for the Bahá’ís of Australia and New Zealand was held to establish a National Spiritual Assembly in 1934 Robert was elected as a delegate for the Bahá’ís of Adelaide and chaired the Convention.[2] He was elected to the first National Spiritual Assembly of Australia as Chairman and served on the institution until the late 1940’s.[3] He also secured the incorporation of the Local Spiritual Assembly of Adelaide in 1934.[4]
He became ill in 1950 and pain prevented him from moving freely for the rest of his life, nevertheless he taught the Faith to anyone he was able to up until his passing in 1962.[5]
