Olympia is the capital of the U.S. state of Washington.
History[edit]
At the beginning of the Ten Year Crusade in 1953 Olympia was identified as a goal city for the establishment of a Local Spiritual Assembly by 1963. No Bahá’ís lived in the city as of 1953,[1] but pioneers had moved in by 1954.[2]
In 1956 the Bahá’ís of Olympia hosted a public meeting to commemorate World Religion Day at which a presentation on the Holy Land was made.[3] Teaching work progressed slowly throughout the 1950's and 1960's and a Local Spiritual Assembly was eventually established in 1968,[4] and that year a Bahá’í Winter School was held at the Millersylvania Youth Camp near the city.[5] In 1972 a Bahá’í club was founded at Washington Junior High School in Olympia.[6]
In 1980 Bahá’í children in Olympia presented books to the Timberland Regional Library System in honor of the United Nations International Year of the Child and the Olympia Bahá’ís participated in the Olympia Lakefair Parade.[7] In 1985 the Bahá’ís of Olympia organized a meeting to commemorate the first United Nations International Day of Peace.[8]
