Oceanic and Continental Conferences, 1970-71

Eight Oceanic and Continental Conferences were held between August 1970 and September 1971 in support of the Nine Year Plan (1964-1973). The various conferences were attended by Hands of the Cause including Rúḥíyyih Khánum, William Sears, Jalál Kháḍih, Raḥmatu’lláh Muhájir, John Robarts, Collis Featherstone and Paul Haney along with members of the Continental Boards of Counsellors and Knights of Bahá’u’lláh.[1][2] The most attended conference was held in Kingston, Jamaica in May, 1971 with more than 1,200 Bahá’ís from across twenty-nine countries.[3] A concert featuring Dizzy Gillespie and Seals and Crofts was attended by more than 3,000 people, and the 3-day conference saw more than 500 new declarants.[4] All together, the eight conferences were attended by nearly 6,000 Bahá’ís.[5] The Universal House of Justice addressed letters to each conference, which were reproduced in The Bahá’í World.[6]
