Nellie Hope Lloyd (1876 - April 24, 1967) was an early American Bahá’í.

Background[edit]

Lloyd was born in New York City in 1876 to Irish parents.[1] She became an active Bahá’í and was serving as Treasurer of the New York City Bahá’í community as of 1911.[2]

Lloyd worked alongside Roy C. Wilhelm in organizing Bahá’í events in New York in the 1910's particularly during ‘Abdu’l-Bahá's visit to New York City in 1912.[1] She assisted the Persian-American Educational Society in funding scholarships for Persian students to attend the Bahá’í Tarbiyat School in Tehran in 1913.[3]

By 1919 Lloyd was serving aa Treasurer of the Executive Committee of the New York Assembly, a precursor to the Local Spiritual Assembly, and as a member of the communities Finance Committee.[4] In 1920 Wilhelm hired her to assist him in managing his coffee business,[1] and in 1922 the New York City Bahá’ís formally established a Local Spiritual Assembly according to the formal guidelines established by Shoghi Effendi with Lloyd being elected to the body.[5]

In 1925 the National Spiritual Assembly of the United States & Canada established a National Finance Committee and appointed Lloyd to the body as the member responsible for the Northeastern States,[6] and she was also serving on the Regional Teaching Committee of the Northeastern States the same year.[7]

By 1937 Lloyd had moved to Greenwich, Connecticut, where she was the towns only Bahá’í,[8] remaining an isolated Bahá’í there until at least 1939.[9] By 1940 she had moved to West Palm Beach, Florida, and assisting with running a weekly Bahá’í study class in the city.[10]

In 1967 she passed away in the Bronx in New York.[11]
