Mullá Muḥammad-`Alí Qazvíní (d. 1849) was a Letter of the Living, one of the first eighteen Bábí's.

Biography[edit]

Qazvíní was born in Qazvín into a family of prominent mujtahids and his father, Mullá ‘Abd al-Wahháb, was a prominent clergyman in the city. Mullá Hádí-i-Qazvini was his brother. He notably did not engage in clerical politics unlike most sons of clergymen who tended to try and secure inheritance of their fathers positions.[1]

At some point he married the sister of Ṭáhirih,[2] and in the early 1840's he supported Ṭáhirih as she developed an interest in and aptitude for theology and began corresponding with Siyyid Káẓim.[3] He may have accompanied Ṭáhirih when she moved to Karbila from Qazvin in late 1843.[4] In 1844 Ṭáhirih entrusted Qazvíní with a sealed letter which he took to Shiraz and delivered to the Báb. In the letter Ṭáhirih acknowledged the Báb's station and both Ṭáhirih and Qazvíní were appointed Letters of the Living by the Báb.[5] After a brief period the Báb instructed the Letters to leave Shiraz to proclaim the Bábí religion and Qazvíní moved to Karbila.[6]

In 1848 Qazvíní participated in the Conference of Badasht and in 1849 he joined Mulla Husayn's company in Mazandaran when Husayn raised the Black Standard. Mulla Husayn's company became besieged at the Shrine of Shaykh Tabarsi. Eventually they surrendered however the government troops violated the terms of surrender and executed many of the Bábí's. Qazvíní was martyred during the conflict.[7]
