Louise Waite

Louise R. Waite (1866 - May 27, 1939), given the name Sháhnaz Khánum by ‘Abdu’l-Bahá, was an early American Bahá’í who went on pilgrimage and met ‘Abdu’l-Bahá and received forty-one Tablets from Him.

Biography[edit]

Waite was born in La Crosse, Wisconsin, in 1866 to James Dunn and Virginia Robinson and she attended a girl's college in Staunton, Virginia, in her youth.[1][2]

During the 1890s she was going by Louise Spencer and living in Chicago. On April 15, 1902, she married Edgar F. Waite,[3] and that year she also received her first Tablet from ‘Abdu’l-Bahá.[4] She had sent poetry to ‘Abdu’l-Bahá and He encouraged her to continue writing.[4]

In October 1909 she went on pilgrimage to the Holy Land and met ‘Abdu’l-Bahá in person and she was with Him during His visit to Chicago when He toured the United States in 1912. After the Ascension of ‘Abdu’l-Bahá in 1921 the Waite's moved to Los Angeles where they both served on the Local Spiritual Assembly for many years.[5]

Waite passed away in her sleep due to natural causes in Los Angeles in 1939 and Shoghi Effendi sent the following cable to the Local Spiritual Assembly:

"Passing of Sháhnaz, beloved pioneer, deeply lamented. Record (of her) outstanding services imperishable. Reward assured. Ardent prayers."[3]
