Little Rock is a city of the U.S. State of Arkansas. The city was the first in Arkansas to have a firmly established Bahá’í community with its Assembly, formed in 1943, being the first in the State.
History[edit]
In January 1939 Marvin Newport spent ten days in Little Rock while traveling from New York to California and he was able to speak on the Faith at the Kiwanis Club and Rotary Club in the city resulting in lengthy discussions with several prominent people.[1] In early 1941 Howard Colby Ives visited the city during a travel teaching trip to Arkansas.[2]
As of 1941 there were three Bahá’ís in Little Rock,[3] and as of early 1943 there were six.[4] Before Ridvan that year Homer W. Holmes, his wife, and Barbara McCurdy pioneered to Little Rock,[5] allowing for the Local Spiritual Assembly of Little Rock to be established in 1943.[6] In the mid-1940's the community began to host public meetings at the Hotel Lafayette on various topics with the meetings continuing to be held until the late 1960's.[7]
In 1952 a celebration of World Religion Day held by the Little Rock Bahá’í community was attended by seventy-five people.[8]
The Little Rock Bahá’í community purchased a building in 1973 which remains the Bahá’í Center to the present day.[7]
