Kazan is the capital and largest city of the Russian republic of Tatarstan, with a relatively large Baha'i community. Located on the Volga River, Kazan is the fifth-largest city in the Russian Federation, a major industrial, cultural and religious centre, and the historical capital of the Khanate of Kazan. Much like Tatarstan as a whole, Kazan is home to a mix of ethnic Tatars and Russians, who largely practice Sunni Islam and Orthodox Christianity, respectively.
