Drug abuse continues to present its challenge to society - it is on the rise in most of the industrialized countries of the world. Each year accidents due to the use of alcohol and illicit drugs take a heavy toll in human lives, thousands of children are born already addicted and many schoolchildren and young adults are seriously affected. Society finds itself in a dilemma in its approach to the problem: in the one hand modern civilization has increased the individual’s expectations of security and comfort and of an instant panacea for all ills, while on the other the person in search of meaning in life will find no easy answers in a world of social stress and uncertainty.
