Hendrik Olsen

Hendrik Olsen (d. June 20, 1967) was the first Bahá'í from Greenland.

Biography[edit]

Hendrik was a writer and translator. He served as a Local Parliament member and as a member of the Landsrad, the National Parliament of Greenland.[1]

He first heard of the Faith when he received some Bahá'í literature from Johanne Sorenson in 1946,[2] he replied to her and they continued corresponding. He translated the booklet Bahá'u'lláh and His Message into the language of Greenland as a result of their correspondence.

In Spring, 1965 he asked to meet Johanne, and she traveled to Greenland accompanied by a young Bahá'í, Dr. Ra'fat. Hendrik became a Bahá'í during their visit, and a public meeting attended by 100 people was held in his home in Upernavik.[3]

He began translating Bahá'u'lláh and the New Era into Greenlandic after declaring, which he was halfway towards completing when he passed away in 1967.[4]
