Hayward is a city in Alameda County, California.
History[edit]
Hayward was made a Goal City of the Ten Year Plan in 1953, meaning that it was a goal of the American Bahá'í community to establish a Local Spiritual Assembly for Hayward.[1]
Although Hayward did not have any Bahá'í residents prior to 1953 it was already settled by a Bahá'í pioneers Winifred E. Bennell and Muriel Ferguson by November 1953.[2][3] By 1956 there were ten Bahá'ís living in the cities of San Leandro and Hayward and a Local Spiritual Assembly of the San Leandro-Hayward Judicial District was established.[4][5]
By 1957 the Hayward Bahá'í community had a Bahá'í Center and a Race Amity Day meeting was held there on June 9, 1957 which was attended by thirty-two adults, three youth and six children.[6]
In 1972 a Regional Youth Conference was held in Hayward, and attended by over 250 Bahá'ís. Auxiliary Board Member Margaret Gallagher spoke on the Covenant at the Conference.[7]
