Biography[edit]

Harlan was born in Chicago in 1922 to prominent American Bahá'ís Carl Scheffler, who served on the National Spiritual Assembly of the U.S. and Canada, and May Scheffler, who served on the Bahá'í Archives and History Committee of the United States and Canada.

He was active in the Bahá'í community as a youth, serving on Chicago Bahá'í boards and being appointed to the Archives and History Committee in 1941.[1] He was serving on the U.S. Committee on Pamphlet Literature as of 1946,[2] and participated in a travel teaching trip to Sioux Falls, Iowa, with a group of Bahá'í youth in 1946.[3] In 1947 he chaired a Bahá'í forum for the public in Evanston.[4] In 1948 he helped his father establish an art studio which produced scratchboard drawings for advertising agencies.[5]

On October 20, 1951, Harlan married Barbara Ann Plymate in Evanston.[6] In 1956 he was appointed to the Temple Public Meetings Committee.[7] In 1958 he was interviewed on local Chicago television, speaking on the Faith.[8]

In 1964 Harlan prepared an artist's sketch for the Bahá'í exhibit at that years Chicago World Flower and Garden Show which was included in the official guide book of the show.[9] In 1965 a piece of Harlan's art was selected as cover of an edition of World Order of Bahá'u'lláh, a compilation of letters of Shoghi Effendi.[10] Drawings of the Bahá'í Temples by Harlan were used on the cover of the book Citadel of Faith, another compilation of letters of Shoghi Effendi published in 1965.[11] The Bahá’í Publishing Trust sold some of his art throughout the 1980s.

After retiring Harlan moved to rural Indiana, where he produced art which received some local acclaim. He eventually moved to Cincinnati where he passed in 2014, survived by his sister Betty, two children, four grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.[12]
